    Yao developing a mean streak?

Chinese players arent supposed to show any anger?

Yao was so upset after his teams 83-58 trouncing at the hands of the Spanish National Team in their opening game.

"I feel so disappointed I lost all my hopes for this team," Yao said to the official Olympic reporter before reaching the rest of the media.

Yao’s complaints include his teammate’s lack of defense, inability to run the play coach Del Harris had set up, and other breakdowns that led to the Chinese meltdown. By doing so Yao was in violation of a Chinese protocol that says every player is to be treated as an interchangeable, equal part of the team.

"If you don't die in silence," Yao said, quoting Lu Xun, one of the most revered Chinese writers, "you will explode in silence."
"Yao Ming was angry, angrier than anyone had ever seen him during an NBA game, as Spain was crushing his Chinese national basketball team Sunday in an Olympics preliminary round. And now a TV reporter from his country was asking whether it was appropriate to show such anger in public."

"Yao had already barked at teammate Menke Bateer, who, when not launching 3-pointers, had been playing defense like one of Harris' Mavericks. Yao had ripped into teammates who ignored Harris' instructions. He had broken with Chinese protocol that says every player is to be treated as an interchangeable, equal part and that decorum is valued." Houston Chronicle
If you don't die in silence," Yao said, quoting Lu Xun, one of the most revered Chinese writers, "you will explode in silence."

So Yao exploded before the frustration killed him.

He did look as if he had to let it out.

"He was a little upset the players forgot some of the plays and forgot from the timeout to the court what we said we were going to do," Harris said. "We had several breakdowns of guys not doing what we said we were going to do. He told me there was a possibility of that happening in games here. After the game was over, he said, 'Coach, I told you.'

"He was yelling at the players. That was what he was talking about. I don't know what he said, but I know what he was mad about. He was basically saying, `(When) the coach calls something, you run it.' "

This is a good thing once the NBA starts.

China might kick his *** though. He's probably had enough of their system.

Well if he doesn't want to be there, then he shouldn't have come at all. That's a disgrace for someone who was given the honour of carrying the country flag at the opening ceremony.
He's been in the US too long, forgot this mean streak crap, he's started to get a huge head. I've noticed over the years when nba players return to their international team, they fit right in and don't think they are any better and don't expect to be treated any differently. Yao should remember that and stop putting down his teammates, at least publicly. I've been very disappointed by his lack of pride and comradeship here.

Nah, there's so much resting on his shoulders -- let's see how he does next game.

I think he jut wants to win. He's upset guys arent listening to the coach, and they lost.
Team USA should be just as upset about losing, yet one of the players goes on record saying he's not embarrased. He should be embarrased.

he should be angry if his teammates arent even running the play. they should be embarrassed for playing like crap. if they play hard an get beat, then yao should be cool with that, but he should lead by getting in their face when they are screwing up. he is clearly better than any of his teammates and should not lower himself to chinese national team playing standards. he is trying to make them better. probably been watching tapes of bird and mj back in the day.

For one, he has no choice in the matter. Even if he doesn't want to be there, China requires him to be there otherwise he'll be cast as a traitor/defector (see Whang Zhiu Zhiu). Secondly, wouldn't you be pissed if your teammates don't run the play your coach called? Lastly, him getting mad shows his pride, not lack of it. If he didn't have any pride, he wouldn't have said anything at all.

DISCUSSION OVER. China beats NZ with Yao scoring 39, yes, 39 points. China 69-62 NZ. 39 out of 69 total points. That's crazy!!!! Go Yao!
