The authentics are out?? Are you sure? I'll have to look at those. How did you like Beale?? You've hit most of the tourist places, but I can give you some food suggestions if you need some. Why did your girlfriend move down here?

Yup...they're available at the team store at the FedEx. I think they came out earlier this week, actually. I went there yesterday morning, and it was pretty busy in the store. $160 for the authentic, $50 for the replica...but the authentic looks so much sweeter, in part, because of the bear claw around the ball at the base of the collar (like where the NFL shield is on those jerseys). I liked Beale street...a strip of bars that has a lot of personality. It's obviously not a place I'd want to go every weekend (I'm a bigger fan of finding a few holes-in-the-wall that are nice and get crowded occasionally, not all the time), but it was a fun place to visit. Just don't grill me on details...because I lost many of those brain cells that night. As for my girlfriend, she got a clerkship with a federal judge down here, so she's here for a year. She wanted a change after living in NY state/city her whole life, so she applied to places in the South and Midwest instead of the Northeast. She like the place a lot.

As for food suggestions...thanks, I'll definitely take any. Her birthday's tonight, so I'm taking her to Cielo...mistake? Good idea? Also normal food that doesn't always attack my bank account suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

[And really, doesn't everyone find learning about Memphis more interesting than talking about how Tim Thomas wants to box K-mart with gloves on? I mean really...with gloves? Even when Thomas is trying to be tough, he still can't hang]

The salmon is great, they are voted one of the better Martini makers in the city. Entrees are $20 and up, just so you know (no clue if that is in your budget) Nice place though. Does she live downtown?? There are a bunch of small pubs in the East Memphis area. I frequent one near Clark Tower called Brookhaven Pub.

Sweet. Thanks. Martinis make a good birthday, even if she does have work tomorrow. I'm still not sure what constitutes "downtown," but she lives like 3 minutes away from the courthouse and the Pyramid. She lives in a place called the Arbors, which is like a minute past a bridge off of Front street soon after the Pyramid. (On Mud Island, maybe? I think that's what she says). I think we went to someplace in East Memphis the other night to eat...Jarret's, I think? They had some real good seafood. From what we saw that area looks a lot nicer/safer/more suburban...is that the case, or was it just the areas that we drove through?

Ahh, she lives in Harbor Town. My wife wants to move there but the homes are like $200 a square foot (we live in one that is $75 per sqft. now). Damn Jarrett's and now Cielo, big spender! East Memphis is actually not the suburbs, although it might give off that feeling. Its nice, but midtown and downtown also have their nice spots. Memphis is an old city (over 170 years) so it has evolved and there are places that look "bad" because they are old, but its not the case.

Yeah...but for every expensive meal, I like to have a nice good meal like Corky's. With my girlfriend being a vegetarian who eats fish, that meal was appreciated on multiple levels. I definitely haven't felt like any place in Memphis is really "bad;" I went to college on the south side of Chicago, and I feel much safer here than there. But it's weird because Memphis has some pretty less-than-stellar statistics crime-wise, so I'm wondering where all that goes down.

It all goes down in South Memphis. In other words, if you end up being a victim of violent crime in Memphis, you probably shouldn't have been in that place!

Hmm, you think Corky's is good? Do you like pulled pork or ribs. You haven't even scratched the surface of good BBQ in the city. I live very near Corky's though so they get my fair share of business.

I thought the pulled pork sandwhich was really nice and tender...and my wallet liked the price. What are good bbq places I could suggest? My girlfriend heard Corky's and Rendezvous were the best places, so those are places that she wants to go...but having lived here a while, you probably know better.

I'll pass along the avoiding the South part advice, thanks. I think so far she's been operating under the rule of "if there is a place with a neon sign advertising bail bonds nearby...it probably isn't a good idea to be there."
