Ehh I don't know if I'd go that far to say he cost himself his job by keeping George on the bench.

Remember, he's never been one to beat around the bush as we saw with his conference yesterday when he pretty much told us that Vogel was basically begging to keep his job.

When Bird was a Celtic he had 4 coaches in 13 seasons and when he coached the Pacers he only stayed 3 years on the bench. Based on his experiences as a player and as a coach, it may be something he truly believes.

Firing Vogel may not be about his message growing stale on the players, but his message is growing stale because he won't change or adapt based on the personnel or what the front office (Bird) believes how they should play. If Vogel isn't willing to adapt or change the way they want him to, he needs to go. Bird seemed to have higher expectations for the team...maybe there were things Bird wanted to see (George at the 4, more growth w/ Turner) and they didn't happen the way he wanted.

Yeah I don't know if I agree with bird in the "message" thing but I do think that's what he believes. I also think he does have higher expectations.

          Per ProBasketballTalk

There’s plenty at stake in this Spurs-Thunder series already.

The winner advances to the Western Conference finals – an accomplishment in itself – likely to face the Warriors, who still haven’t gotten Stephen Curry back.

But this second round matchup could also prove instrumental in whether Durant stays in Oklahoma City or bolts – maybe to San Antonio.

          Marc Stein of ESPN:

As well as Durant and his close-knit tandem of representatives, Rich Kleiman and Charlie Bell, have done in terms of keeping their intentions mysterious, there is a working assumption among KD’s would-be suitors that a second-round Thunder exit essentially cinches the notion that he’ll indeed walk away and look for the best external situation that positions him to win that elusive first championship.

The theory (stress: theory) also holds that OKC success in this round against the 67-win Spurs would be enough, no matter what happens in a presumed Western Conference finals showdown with the Warriors, to convince Durant, at the very least, to sign a new two-year deal with Oklahoma City ‎that contains a player option for Year 2.

Durant has already denied a report he’ll leave the Thunder if they don’t reach the NBA Finals. It’s never that cut and dry for a free agent.

But the Thunder’s success is works in their favor, and seeing that come undone right in front of his eyes could push Durant out of Oklahoma City. Likewise, seeing the Thunder win could convince Durant of his current team’s potential.

I don’t know whether Durant will re-sign if the Thunder advance and leave if they don’t. But if I’m Oklahoma City or San Antonio, I’d sure want to win to tip the odds toward my favor.

I get it but that's such a weird article.

If OKC shows no potential of beating better teams, he bolts. If they do, he stays.

            I feel like that's obvious.

I've always been under the thought that he'll do a 2 year deal with a player option for the 2nd year regardless of what they did this year.

Still believe that even if they lose to the Spurs.

He probably should bounce but he probably won't.

I hope he bounces if for no other reason than to change things up a bit. I say that now though and then watch him go to the East.

And to further add on to this Bird actually said he made up on his mind on this decision by the AS break, but decided Frank deserved to finish the season out.

It's pretty obvious if you follow the Pacers or have read things Bird has said throughout the year he wasn't happy with the way Vogel ran the team. Bird put the team together to play a certain way and Vogel ran it his own way. Though I will say it is partially on PG for basically refusing to play the 4.

Memphis fires Joerger. Interestingly enough, the report says he was let go because of other job interests.

Edit. And just like that, I see the Kings have him at the top of their list. Any relation between him and Divac?

And there goes Dave Joerger on the list of fired coaches. I'd expect the Grizzlies to push for Vogel. Seems like a Memphis kind of hire.

The divide between Dave Joerger and the Grizzlies was too great, sources told ESPN, leading to the coach's dismissal after three seasons in Memphis.

Why did they fire him? He did a solid job considering all the injuries.

It has been reported that Joerger wanted to be considered for other openings around the league and the Grizzlies let him go because of that. I don't blame them one bit for letting him go...no reason to be in limbo if you can possibly snag a better candidate or lose out on another while you wait for your coach figure out what he's doing.

I remember last year, he was being linked to going to Minnesota but they went with Flip(RIP) instead.

So with Memphis firing Joerger, that makes 11 coaching changes since the start of this season.
