Nah, nothing was ever said publicly as far as I know. But it was discussed in the media as an ongoing point of negotiation, so perhaps more of an issue among the owners than the NBA office.

The other is the possibility of a hard salary cap, something the NBA was interested in during the last lockout in 2011, but ultimately relented on in favor of more stringent luxury tax penalties that were designed to prevent super teams like the LeBron James-led Miami Heat.
During the 2011 lockout, the NBA made noise about instituting a hard salary cap that would, in theory, force superstars to take serious pay cuts if they wanted to team up together and force teams to break up developing star cores if they became too expensive. Silver chose not to discuss specific proposals at his Tuesday press conference, but acknowledged that the NBA plans to address the subject in upcoming negotiations with the National Basketball Players Association.

A lot of flip flopping on all sides of the coin.....

Stern definitely approached the last CBA under the guise of competitive balance...which the general public ate up until it was exposed for BS..

      All here

The Heat situairon was not warm and fuzzy at all...

People trying to make these offseasons even more dull than they already are lol. Big name free agents switching teams is rare enough as it is. Don't need even more disincentives for players to leave teams.

Exactly. I mean if you don't want players leaving let's just go back to the days of the reserve clause. Where players literally couldn't leave their teams unless they were traded. So there would be no free agency period.

Also for clearance, if needed, I don't think this should happen. And I have no problems with super teams forming.

Those dudes basically got together and planned to hpok up together as soon as free agency started...

Bosh doing a documentary and all...lebron walked off on the cavs and they never heard from him again until the espn special

It was hilarious but the salty and scared wagon riders are a sight to see right now.

Some of em dont even care that theyre being hypocritical either.

Havent come to the acceptance stage yet
Not to mention Bosh gave up on Raptors/was "checked out" once the all-star break was over in his final season before going to Heat. That thing was planned out such a long time in advance to go to Miami.

That right there was just a distraction

We all know they went into that lockout under the claims that they were losing money and wanted more of the BRI.

They gained sympathy on that.... it didn't help that Billy Hunter was screwing the players association over with his family and he and Fisher were fighting during the negotiations....Fisher also looking out for himself at the same time.

                          That's what I mean though .

It's being used now like it was then. It's not like they're just picking on KD on particular.

It's a an ideal opportunity for Silver to come out and say 'well we saw this coming and tried to stop it, but the players wouldn't let us..

Yep. It's again leveraging fan emotions because most root for the jersey, not the player.

It depends on how the players view it. I have a feeling most of the players don't care, despite what Silver says. I think they care from a competitive standpoint. But financially, they know Durant made a lot of money and so his decision is in line with what all players (as a group) prefer of their union.

There is something to having the support of the fan base during negotiations and Silver cleverly took a step toward nudging that base and reminding them "hey, we tried to avoid this thing you're angry about."

But let's not kid ourselves. It's for leverage in the negotiations. Because the league definitely benefits from Golden State having Durant. Even the owners in smaller markets, including the one in OKC, benefits from Durant in Golden State. Again, they don't benefit from a competitive standpoint, but financially, they do.

If Billy Hunter was still running things, I assume he would have responded but I think this new woman is smarter and she's going to pick her battles.

Can they really even play the "Well, we TRIED to prevent this" when the rules THEY(The League)put in place basically made this OK to happen?

I'm not sure there's anything realistically you can do short of putting a hard cap, which is technically already in place.

They can blame it on the players not wanting the cap jump smoothed.
