Re: Is an NBA Lockout inevitable?

I cracked up when Lamond Murray said owners were giving out crazy 60,80 mil contracts to non star players just so they can say salaries are out of control...........

umm Lamond the last time I checked nobody puts a gun to an owners head to sign off on any contract given to a player.

And why would owners give out 60,80 mil contracts just to prove a point of why salaries are out of control? Call me crazy but I don't see any owner pissing away $80 mil just so they can use it as a argument for a lockout.

I feel really sorry for the average Joe if the NBA does have a lockout next season. Think about the workers at the Air Canada Center who lose salary by only working Rap games and not Leaf games this season, and then next year it will be reversed.

Labor and owners need to remember that they are a partnership and rely on each other.

I think the NBA and NBAPA will figure it out without a lockout or a strike. The argument for shorter contracts is interesting, because on the surface it appears to hurt the franshise owners in the smaller markets (DW's strategy has always been to reward his best players with long contract for stability).

However, that strategy could still work and the shorter overall contract length, say three years, would allow teams to escape from "contract boo-boo's" (a/k/a Austin Croshere) much quicker.

            We'll see...

I wish owners were more smart and less flamboyant/maverick types. I was listening to an interview a couple weeks or so ago with the head of the Canadian Auto Workers union Buzz Hargrove speaking about the NHL Lockout and he said something that really interests me. He said that owners should set a personal accross the board salary limit. One of the hosts said that that's colusion but Hargrove said it isn't because owners have the right to set a personal cap on how much they pay workers/players based on their performance or for financial reasons.

I know baseball got in trouble in, I think '87 for this but if owners were to do this in the NBA and NHL and not make it too obvious then I think it could work. Then again owners in every sport lose their self restraint and need a cap. Even with a cap you'll still get yahoos like Snyder in DC.

Sorry but I completely disagree with this. let a kid out of high school try the jump, why not, he's not giving up his academic eligibilty to go to college ...

He can always get an education while he's in the league or in any other league for that matter, how many will actually do that, Iono ?, but you still have to leave that right for the individual to choose his job ...

Its funny how the league complains about high school kids ruining the league or this and that, yet GMs and Team Presidents, Vices ect. continue to draft them over the college guy with experience ... how can you complain about something that you are contributing too ... plus the NFL is a completly different monster they the NBA, NBA a pyhsical sport but not nearly as close to NFL, thus the 18 year old age limit ...

and the NCAA on this is so bias, they care nothing for the kids making the jump, they only care for the money thier losing from tv ratings, merchandise, ticket sales a blue chipper can bring to a university, such hypocrites ...

like I said before let them make the jump, choose what they want to do, school is not ruled out when you do ...

The league/so called analysts/ tv personalities are so two-faced though, when Vince earned his degree in college and wanted to GRADUATE on a day of a playoff game, everyone and thier mom criticized him ... like he was doing some detrimental to the team, he still showed up to play ... those people I mentioned above send mixed messages ...

"Yeah go to school, buuuuuut not in the middle of the playoffs, it might cost us money"

its people like that who encourages my opinion on a guy getting a max contract or not, get them before they find a way to get you for your paper, cause believe me thier exploring ways to give you the rusty jux ...
