Different team, they were threatened, and responded. U.S showed they could turn it on at anytime.

2016 Rio Olympics Men & Women's Basketball Tournament Discussion

Saw this posted on Bleacher Report asking could a team comprised international stars beat the US? Now I'm guessing their talking about our A team, cause clearly they can beat this current squad. But if we sent say LeBron, Steph, Kawahi, Harden, Davis, those guys?

I don't think we necessarily smash them, but I say we win that.

Im assuming the teams are comprised of international players that currently play in the NBA? It would have been a lot more competitive a couple of years ago IMO. Now, i think they would put up a fight but get beat pretty soundly.

The team I would assemble for the match up would be a younger squad of:

        Rubio
        Wiggins
        Giannis
        Porzingis
        Gasol

          Gasol > Jonas though?

Right now I'm taking Team USA over any collection of international stars assembled. But 5-6 years down the line, if Porzingis, Wiggins, Simmons, Giannis, Exum, etc. pan out.... that would be a much tougher call.

Thought you were talking about Pau since he's in the picture.

And seeing how Jurkic performed this year, it'd be tough to leave him off any Int'l top 5.

One of the main reasons some of these teams can compete at all is the chemistry they've developed over many, many years of playing together. Even the stars play within a known offense and everyone else knows how to play around them. Whatever international team they put together may have more overall talent, but I would think probably would be worse than some of the pre-assembled teams.

I like guys like Green and Jordan making the cut (maybe even Butler I guess) but I'd love to see a US team picked for specific roles rather than picking stars and figuring out how to make them mesh. Obviously you'd want some great players filling scoring roles, but also guys specifically for off ball movement/spot up shooting, pass first PG, defensive pairs, etc.

It's not like the US team filled with stars is in any real danger any time soon, but it'd be better basketball to watch imo.

Marc is the beast these days but Pau is still a different player when it comes to international play... he's still doing work.

I REALLY wish Spain had their full roster. That matchup with the US would've been a great one.

A longer (nothing crazy, slightly longer is all) training camp would help.

Yea, I don't think theres much drop off from Spain. If both Gasol brothers show up and Ibaka. Although I heard Ibaka didn't like his playing time.

Still that would be quite the challenge for the U.S.

Spain's still very good. Should be a good one against USA.

Which happens to be one of the reason why we've struggled or not looked like our usual "beat you by 40+" selves.

We had some of these the last 2 years and it was definitely noticeable on the London team.

It's not like the US team filled with stars is in any real danger any time soon, but it'd be better basketball to watch imo.
So I take it you didn't enjoy watching the last 2 teams they sent to China or London then?

Yes they are, Rubio is as good as it gets as a floor general. Gasol is as dangerous as ever in international play, they have guards everywhere that can shoot, Mirotic is a mismatch. it's going to be a challenge, they can't get off to a bad start against this team that's for sure.

I enjoyed them... but it's not must watch tv for me. I'd rather watch the Spurs or Warriors 1 - 12 go against the other countries. Ironically it'd likely lead to bigger blow outs than what we've seen, but would be a better watch imo.

Spurs vs other countries would be really interesting with some players on the court for both teams
