Re: Why can't players play like Garnett?

I'm not implying that Garnett is the only one who plays hard. Other players such as Iverson would be in the same category and lessor players who want to keep their jobs. It seems to be basketball has more high priced slackers
than any other sport. Shaq, Mcgrady, Carter, Yao, these guys look bored on the court. If you have a max contract you should be motivated enough to play hard everynite. When I see players joking around in the middle of the game the intensity cannot be there. Shaq and Yao alone should be getting 30Pts and 20 Rebounds a nite with their eyes closed. When's the last time you saw football and hockey players joking around with the opposition during a game? When's the last time you've seen Garnett smile during a game. The guy's paid to be a warrior and does just that. If Shaq had his intensity you could hand him MVP at the start of the season.

I don't know, Yosemite. Just because these guys make a lot of cash playing sports doesn't mean they need to treat their opponents like their mortal enemy or not have any fun out there. While I want to watch a competetive game I don't want to see a bunch of "Terminator" personalities out on the court either. I can't speak for Hockey but in the NFL I see a lot of players sharing a laugh or respect for one another between plays.

You'll see this alot in the NBA as opponents share a laugh after timeouts, during free throws, etc.

These guys work roughly 8 months a year get guaranteed contracts for millions of dollars and have tons of women after them(as superficial as that attraction may be). I see no reason why an NBA athlete or any other pro would cop a scowl when they get on their field of play unless an action by that opponent called for it.

I do agree with you that NBA players may be the most spoiled out of the big 4 sports categories.

EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

because they all know that someone is going to pay them the money they want so they figure why do we have to try all the time
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

I definitely agree with Iverson, and I hate the guy. He's freakin' crazy.

I'd also like to add Amare Stoudamire to that list. Dude is a straight up FREAK.

                    BINGO. Its sad but true

Thats why I really cherish a player like Reggie Miller. He just goes 110% every game, every practice. And that rubs off on the younger guys (AL Harrington, Jermaine O Neal, jamaal tinsley)

The "KG-ian Fire" as I like to call it is, something that you either have or you don't. Some guys can gear up for when they are in their "contract year" some guys can rev it up when they they feel they've been slighted or dissed, but very few guy just "bring it" all the time regardless of circumstance. In every sport there are probably 25% of the guys who have it, but it really stands out with the guys who have the conditioning, skill level, and athleticism to go with that relentless focus and intensity.

I think of myself as that kind of "controlled fury" player and yet I still find myself losing my intensity 10 to 15 percent of the time, and it makes me crazy. So when you see guys who operate at about a 95-98% attentiveness and energy plateau it has to get you fired up, and if you're not one of them, make you a bit envious as well

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I'm sure living in Minnesota... just being able to do something other than ice fish and listen to pasty rosy-cheeked people with horrible accents... will excite you...

Maybe KG's "Fire From Within" comes from the fact that Minnesota is such a crappy state... or maybe he just loves the game...
