Eh it's a bad look for both. Cavs have other offers but they are probably significantly worse than this one.

Don't really agree with any of this at all. First the other offers aren't "significantly worse" at all. In fact the Milwaukee offer might be just as good if not better than the trade they made. The Brooklyn pick is the only thing that could make it a better offer.

Secondly there's a difference between taking a chance on someone who's injury might not be as significant as originally believed and flat out taking on a guy who you know isn't significantly hurt. For all we know Ainge sold IT's health issues as being behind him or minor only for the physical today to show something different.

I thought the Milwaukee rumor was shut down very quickly that they didn't offer that. and the only other reported interest was PHX who was not putting Josh Jackson in any package.

Ainge could've lied or not led on that his injury wasn't as bad but once a trade is agreed upon the Physical would reveal that so idk. I guess that could be the case.

This trade really was best of both worlds for a player that wanted out and had no leverage they get now and future... I dunno what package CLE could've gotten that's a better future asset than the BKN pick in case Lebron leaves.

What if the Celtics threw in that Nets pick to get Cleveland to agree to a trade so that IT could have his physical checked by a second opinion, have the trade nullified, and then use that to gain upper hand with fanbase on IT extension / renouncing of rights in next off season?

Ainge could be Littlefinger.

Hold your horses, pause your Blu-rays, and don’t buy or burn that jersey just yet. The NBA offseason drama may not be over.

Like all the best news dumps, one dropped late Friday night from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He*reported*that after Isaiah Thomas traveled to Cleveland and underwent the routine physical that players must pass in all trades, the Cavs were “still evaluating” Thomas’s injured hip and “weighing their options” before completing the deal that included Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Boston’s 2018 unprotected first-round pick from the Brooklyn Nets (hold this thought). Woj went on to report that a “source involved in the process” described the situation as “sensitive.” There was no clear indication whether Thomas had passed the physical or not.

Deep breath.*We can infer that IT’s health still requires attention and some level of treatment, even though Thomas’s injured hip was said to be*“great”*just a couple of weeks ago (remember, the Celtics and Thomas opted*not to have surgery*in late July). The update after the physical likely wouldn’t have been reported otherwise.

There is precedent for this kind of situation.*In 2009, Tyson Chandler had already been traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder when he failed a physical because of a possible resurgence of a toe injury, a risk that OKC refused to take on. The trade was rescinded. That situation was particularly fascinating given that the same doctor that made the ruling on Chandler was the one who diagnosed the injury on him when it first occurred.

A failed physical could mean the Cavs void the trade altogether, leaving Thomas and Crowder to return to the team that just bid them farewell and pairing LeBron with Irving once again. This would be both hilarious and awkward. Reports after the trade suggested that Irving was ready to enact his personal version of a*training-camp holdout*if he wasn’t traded, so one would assume the Cavs would find a way to deal him regardless.

Here’s the reality: Even with an injured Thomas as part of the deal, this may be the best package Cleveland can get for Irving. When*the trade was “made,”*it was largely regarded as a fantastic move for new Cavs GM Koby Altman, who landed in a tough situation with Irving already wanting out. He accomplished more than what was expected by landing two really good players (Thomas and Crowder) and a possible top-five pick in next year’s draft. It was*a win-win, a plan to continue to contend in the present while preparing for a future, with or without LeBron.

Following the news of Thomas’s physical, the burden of decision-making is back on the Cavs. They can void the trade, or try to, if Thomas isn’t as healthy as he was portrayed to be. Or they can still take the deal, and the value of the pick, and run with it. A third option may be to use the situation as leverage. Our own Kevin O’Connor*makes the suggestion herethat it wouldn’t be surprising if the Cavs took on an injured Thomas and asked for another pick. The Celtics would seemingly have no choice but to surrender it given the late wrinkle of Thomas’s hip.

This throws a giant wrench into what is possibly the biggest trade of the offseason. A full shutdown of the deal wouldn’t just undo Danny Ainge’s long overdue trade for a superstar or Cleveland’s solution to the Kyrie demand. It would have ramifications throughout the league.

Maybe the Pawtucket Red Sox should hold off on*Kyrie Irving Day*a little while longer.

Not sure where I stand on this tbh. A part of me really wants Boston to get stuck with a disgruntled Crowder and IT (plus his injuries).

But then another part of me just knows I won't be able to take another week of Celtic fans talking about the Brooklyn pick and how valuable it is, again.

This could just be Cleveland trying to milk another 1st out o the trade. However, the ball is in Kyrie's court. If he makes it known that he won't re-sign with Phoenix, Milwaukee, or who ever then those teams won't be willing to give up any assets worth more than the Brooklyn pick.

I seriously doubt Cleveland is going to void this trade. Irving likes the idea of playing Boston, that Nets pick is the most valuable pick there is on the market, and LeBron seems to be satisfied with this deal.

It's just a bad look all around if this trade doesn't go through, especially after all the hand-wringing and congratulations since it went down a few days ago.

Then again, we don't know what the other offers on the table were for Kyrie ... maybe Cleveland got someone other than the Celtics to up their offer and they're using the Thomas injury to simultaneously get out of the trade AND screw Boston, their biggest in-conference threat. If that's the case, damn that's cold ... but this is "a business" as so many are fond of saying.

And be stuck with an injured/disgruntled Isaiah and a disgruntled Crowder? Their trade value is going to sink substantially if the trade doesn't go through. All 28 other teams will know that IT4's injury is more concerning than we thought. Ainge should just throw a Boston first into the deal so he can get Kyrie and call it good.

I'd be fine with a second rounder or Boston first thrown in. ITs injury was already a concern around the league. Except for in CLE apparently. I wouldn't give them anything else with value.

IT trade value stays about the same too. He's on a 1 year deal and has a bad hip. That was all already known. I always looked at him as a money piece of this deal. Apparently CLE thought he had a clean bill of health. Which is absurd to me.

IT2 yeah sure Crowder trade value will remain the same though.

Knowing that he'll be upset with the organization if he does return, I could see Boston having to sell low on Crowder. He's on one of the best contracts in the league, but teams know he won't be very enthused to play behind Hayward after his team tried trading him and his point guard.

They could always play it out and see if Thomas and Crowder come back with little to no issues and play up to standard, but it's very risky and could ruin whatever team chemistry they have with the few players they brought back.
