Unless you're under martial law, no stadium security would have been able to stop the idiot fan from throwing that beer. What should have happened was Artest let the security do what they should, kick the fan out of the game, and that would have been that. What happened after all that, no security could stop as well, because they didn't get a chance to do their job and diffuse the situation before it got that far. Artest was up in less than a second after the beer hit him, into the stands, I thought it was the job of security to take care of unruly fans, not players. I guess rules have changed.

That fan was a complete toolbox, and i'm embarassed to be a fan right now. I can't blame Artest for what he did, I don't agree with his response, but you can't fault that. The fans were to blame, but Artest didn't handle the situation in the best manner, IMO.
Let us now talk about security. The arenas should be designed so that a phalanx of security guards surround the playing area. In technical terms the fans are too close to the playing area when they can come onto the court or vice versa. I would hate to have to see fences put up to keep out the fans as some soccer stadiums have. The stadiums should be set up with clear separation between the playing area and the stands area.

Another problem is lack of security numerically. Will the league spend more money for security? Seems that CEO Tom Wilson couldn't care less; he thinks Artest started it. Surely the alcohol sales or security played a role as well.

And I have always wondered why alcohol has to be sold in stadiums where the troubles can occur. Surely it would be best to look into the alcohol that fuels the drunken people in the stands. Instead David Stern takes the easy way out and puts the hammer to Rodman's alter ego (the most games Rodman ever missed was 10 at one time! A season surely seems like a bit much and as Mr. Brady said we must have calm/cool reasoning.)

I believe that under real world rules everybody should be fired for this: Artest, Jackson, O'Neal, Jones, Wallaces, etc. Reduce the suspensions to 20 games at most per person or less (for the NBA is not the real world). Stern you have a problem by crikey.
