Well this is just unacceptable on a basketball forum . . .

No love for #12???? John Stockton had his jersey retired today for the Utah Jazz, and it doesn't even get a mention?

Love him or hate him, John Stockton is one of the greatest players of all-time and may be the Smartest Basketball Player of All-Time. This guy's basketball IQ was so high that it was unbelievable. Without having any special athletic gifts, he DEFINED the Point Guard position. No hops (Jordan), no height (Wilt Chamberlin), no muscle (Shaq), none of that. Just pure basketball ran through his veins. I admit, I did not like this guy one bit, seeing as how he destroyed my Lakers year in and year out. At times we can absorb Malone's offensive onslaught, and when we see a crack of day light, just a little opening, #12 would bury a jumpshot, find an open man, take the charge, snipe the steal, or get the lose ball. Annoying, but great.

Wow, I didn't know that. There's no mention of it in NBA.com either.

I'd also like to acknowledge how great John Stockton was. He played with his smarts throughout his career. Not the most athletic guy but he racked-up some great stats and wins. Most assists in a career along with most steals. He may have been dirty at times but hey, that's a part of basketball.

Too bad he didn't get a ring, but he'll always be a great player.

He was a great player, but a dirty player.

He was a very talented in watching the game go on and anticipation of the action, but also perhaps the biggest floppy-Divac artist ever. The sad thing is, so many times, even though it was so obvious that he would just flop to the floor, he still got the charge foul called.

So yeah, he was good, but disgusting at the same time.

I remember Charles Barkley saying on TNT that he would like to get a piece of him for cheap shot elbows to the ribs while Charles was attempting to get rebounds in a crowd.

Being a Laker fan, does taint my appreciation of his skills... but none the less, he was not an example for children in regards to: "how to play well with others"

great player stockton was. Although I was hating on him and his team during the bulls' winning days, I still knew that he was a pure fundamental baller. He is one of the best pg's to ever play the game, and presently only kidd is close to his potential.

At least stockton didn't try to sell-out like Malone did haha lol.

Stockton was hardly a dirty player. Maybe he got the charge calls because they were actual charges. He knew how to position his feet and give the refs credit I think they know what and what isn't a charge more than you and I. Give him credit for outsmarting most players. Barkley would hardly be one who should talk about being dirty.

He was a class act who played the game how it was supposed to be played and was a joy to watch him control the tempo on the court and fluster the opposing team. On of the smartest players to ever play and example of making the most of his skills.

I just read about it this morning, a great player and a class act.

There was a story in sports illustrated or espn the magazine where they polled players about who was the dirtiest player they ever played against and stockton was in the top 3.

he was a really dirty player. i didnt like him at all. he would pull on the defenders arms to make it look like they were reaching in to get calls. he would also use his elbows against bigger ppl. argh i also hated the way he shot the ball.
