    Should fighting be allowed?

In football, there is constant physical contact. If someone cheap-shots you, or pisses you off...you only have to wait until the next snap to get revenge...

In Hockey, its also allowable for one to feed his anger over hard hits, frustration, intimidation or just plain-old short tempers, by throwing down the gloves and going at it. No one looks at hockey players as hoods, criminals, thugs, gangstas or otherwise. It helps prevent escalated contact.

Even in baseball, there is a means for physical retribution. My guy gets hit, your guy gets hit. In the entire history of mankind, there has never been a punch thrown that has hit with the same impact as a fastball. Clemons could have killed Mike Piazza...yet no charges were filed. Its just good hard baseball.

Yet, in basketball, guys get shoved, scratched, grabbed, slapped, and hammered mid-air...but there is absolutely no means for payback. This is the only major sport like that..where big, testosterone filled guys have no way to relieve THEIR anger.

So the question is...why are NBA fights held with so much contempt? Why does the mainstream fan see these guys are ignorant hoodlums. Why is a good dust-up acceptable in hockey, but bad for basketball? Don't these guys deserve a form of retaliation? Sounds crazy, but think about the other sports...

Have you ever in your life seen a decent nba fight? NBA fights are just down right embarassing
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

Pretty simple in football and hockey players have tons of padding on. Football fights are more rare and hockey fights are just plain stupid. You need to watch Rudy T get hit straight in the face in the 70s if you think fighting should be allowed.

I agree - fighting in basketball is arguably a different thing than in football or hockey - simply because of the pads and helmets. Even in boxing, you have pads.

Fighting in basketball consists of unprotected fists hitting or shoving an unprotected chest or face. Thus, the possibility of injury to the participants is too great to even consider making this an accepted part of the game.

Although - I think basketball is a very physical game - and that controlled shoving and pushing already occurs en masse.....

I agree. I say let 'em fight. It would actually make the NBA watchable.

                    Re: Should fighting be allowed?

I dont think they should be allowed to fight. But for the refs to allow more physical contact, especially in the paint. If this big 7 foot, 250lb dude gets smacked on the arm by some 6'3, 185lb dude, than no harm, no foul. If of course, he's preventing him from shooting his shot. But these refs nowadays whistle players up for wayy to many touch fouls.

I mean, I've participated in many street ball games where physical contact is part of the game. When things get to heated, sometimes a fight might break out, but for the most part, anger will lead to more aggressive but competitive play.

Flagrant fouling in the NBA has been spot on for the most part, its when 2 or more players go all out is when a new rule needs to be born. I dont think theses players need to be ejected, instead given a timeout period like the penalty system in hockey. Of course in Hockey, 2 of these penalties results in automatic ejection, so the players will have more to think about if they wanna duke it out the next time.

But the key is not to allow fighting, cause then it'll promote more fighting. But to punish players who think more with they're fist than they're heads.

Look how much publicity the league from the game. The Fight was on almost every news channel and if it was positive or negative its still publicity.

                            Re: Should fighting be allowed?

First off....reason #1 that there is fighting in hockey.....STICKS. If fighting was not allowed, "stickwork" would go up 1000%.

Second, I disagree with your statement about baseball. 99% of "beanballs" are thrown at the back, butt, or leg from 66 feet away. That does nowhere near the damage as one bareknuckle punch landed anywhere on the head or face.

Third, football may be more physical then basketball, but basketball players hit hard and with zero padding. Screens, picks, elbows, box outs, hacks, smacks...these are all very physical acts that have a lingering effect over the course of a game.

They could allow fighting in basketball if they choose...but they would first move the fans about 30 feet off the court and likely put up a partition. They would also lose a ton of momentum. For "Joe Average Fan", a fight in hockey spices up a 1-1 game. In basketball, stopping to square off and dance in the middle of a 103-100 game would actually slow it down.

Finally, you would also have to determine the penalty. Out of the game if you fight? A penalty box? You would have to change the entire sport to accomodate that.
