If they want to, they can take this all the way to the trade deadline. The Lakers can not afford to wait around trying to play chicken with the Spurs if they're ultimate goal is building a super team of LeBron, PG and Kawhi. If that's what the goal is of the Lakers then waiting until next year to sign him is not an option because the only way they're getting him, LeBron and PG is by getting Kawhi traded to them from the Spurs and the longer they wait, the higher the price will be because the temptation to just take the super max extension is going to hang over Kawhi's head the entire time.
I think it all depends. I'm not 100% sold on the LeBron wanting to be there being true. Seems more likely this time around but he's literally be "linked" there for about 8 years now lol. So I guess we'll see how that goes.

IF LeBron does want to be there I think he would sign if one or the other of Kawhi or PG gets there first. Meaning if there is any truth to a Deng salary dump and PG signs then LeBron would sign and they aren't giving up anybody. That team is likely better with all those pieces than it would be with Kawhi anyways, and then they still have them to move for someone else if the Spurs want to play the stubborn card all the way to the deadline. Sure the Spurs could raise their price, but if the hypothetical was PG and Bron are already there the Lakers don't have to match. 20 other All-Stars in the league to throw those assets at. Could be Cousins, Dame, anyone.

My personal gut feeling feels like the whole salary dump thing might be for Cousins and PG.. But I guess time will tell. If LeBron is really headed there I don't think it takes both Kawhi AND PG, but rather one or the other. The Deng trade feels like "well the Spurs are asking too much so let's go this route" IMO.

NBA radio rumor this morning was the Lakers were trying to get a first from Denver to package into the Kawhi trade. If they were to get that from the Hawks in a Deng + multiple picks, or players, swap then they may have their Kawhi trade ready as well as space for PG and Bron after dumping Deng.

As time goes by I'm leaning more towards keeping our young guys and just going after Kawhi next off season without having to give up anything.

The Spurs only have leverage if the LeBron won't sign if Kawhi isn't already in place rumor is true, and I don't expect them to do us any favors nor should they. On that note we shouldn't be in a rush to do anything, he's LeBron and all but how much longer will he be the guy we've seen throughout the years? For all we know he can get here suffer his first major injury and be done. No way I'm giving up young players and draft picks to please a guy on the wrong side of 30.

You almost went New York Knicks let all your future assets get away when Kawhi free agency is one year away, never go New York Knicks

Danny Ainge on making a blockbuster trade:
"If I feel like it'll help our team -- we explore every trade of players of certain magnitude or superstar, first-ballot Hall of Fame-type of players," Danny Ainge said. "We're going to take a look and kick the tires and see if there's something there. But that's all.

"I think those things are unlikely."

it appears I'm much lower on the Lakers young guys than you are. i get the father angle but I would much prefer to get Lonzo in a trade than BI and I'm not even a huge Lonzo fan.

my hot take also is I probably prefer Josh Hart over Kuzma.

Yeah I don't get the hate on Lonzo. As a basketball player, he does everything ABOVE average other than shooting. And he should only get better. His vision and passing will be near an elite level. What's not to like?

I think Kuzma is the best offensive player of the lot, if he were 19 or so instead of 22 I think he would be "untouchable" like Brown and Tatum seem to be. From a Lakers standpoint I wouldn't want to move him or Lonzo. From a Spurs standpoint Kuzma is a bit of a tweener pickup for a team that after losing Kawhi needs a true small forward. From their situation a package of Ingram and Hart might be the best pair unless Randle is in the mix.

It's hard to gauge accurately where the Lakers young guys are at since they were on such poor teams and are so young. It's easier to see Tatum and Mitchell and what they can be on established playoff teams in comparison. Randle, Kuz, Ingram, all look like they could be 20 a night guys, with Kuz and BI being solid rebounders and Randle a double-double machine. I think any combination of that is more than I would give up if I'm the Lakers. As someone mentioned before, the Spurs don't have to do the Lakers any favors but the Lakers shouldn't feel obligated to do the Spurs any either. If Kawhi is who they want they can wait.

If they don't want to wait but the Spurs are stubborn and they feel like they can land PG and Bron they can do that and keep the whole lot of youngsters. Let the Kawhi value keep dropping and if you don't get him at the deadline fine, you still have all those same pieces to trade for one of the other 20 all-stars in the league.
