Since when did ARCADE become a 4-letter word?

I keep reading all of these posts about how this game is too 'arcady' and this game is so 'real' and wonder that as a kid who grew up spending every waking minute I could at the ARCADE, when did that become a dirty 4-letter word that no one wants associated with their game?

Personally if I want a simulation of real ball I'll just grab my shoes and head down to the gym and PLAY REAL BALL. When I play a video game I don't want it to be like that, I want it to be FASTER and MORE POWERFUL than anything I could imagine. If you listen to Rooks talk when they first enter the L, that's what you'll hear them say, that they can't believe how good everyone is. How fast the game is. How tough it is. How powerful and strong these guys are compared to college.

Maybe EA has it right this year. Maybe Sega does. Who knows, but all I know is that I LOVE arcade games. Games that TRANSCEND reality, games that I just can't put down. Games that make me want to throw my controller through the TV set.

What I don't want is reality. I get enough of that every day.

Gimme a holla and let me know whatcha think.

    That is all.

    Peace.

This is a fair point. There is nothing inherently better about a game that seeks to produce as realistic a play experience as possible, just as there's nothing inherently better about a game that seeks to produce a steroid pumped series of moves and plays. There's nothing that makes the one better than the other objectively. It's purely subjective and in the taste of the player. Some people want the archetypical bigger than life gameply; some people want the opposite; and some people want text based stat generating games.

I count the gaming public fortunate that both tastes can be served so effectively.

good points, and i agree to an extent but then i think that is why they make nba street ect etc etc, those are supposed to be arcade games,

but for me, and i know everyone isn't the same, i want to take a team and make them better than what they are in real life, if i can take the hawks and make them win a championship when they haven't been able to then to me that is a gtreat feeling, one that is cheapened when i can take over a game anytime i want by getting to the basket too easy or something of that nature, so the closer the better for me.

i think, again for me, the arcade aspect is the franchise options of trading who i want and drafting who i want, but the gameplay should be dead on so i feel like i have done something worth wild,

plus i'm getting old and can't rise like i used to : )

I have loved the 2k series and I have really disliked the Live series recently, but I am now coming around to appreciate this game, it reminds me of those old school ARCADE games, i like you, used to love the ARCADE games, now i still love 2k3 and it is very simulation like, but I for am one that will start a season and never finish it, so I dont really care about all the draft classes and off season stuff, i need friends to finish a whole season and we can do that in 2k3, upsetting, All in all if u have friends they will want to play live, if you like sitting up in the house countless hours Perfecting rosters and stat tracking and off season acquisitions then you my friend have a lot of time on your hands, Just have fun

Re: Since when did ARCADE become a 4-letter word?

I have been a fan of Live from the beginning. And I also love the NBA2k series. Live has sucked the past couple of years, and with their success with NBA Street, it sounds to me like they maybe overcompensated for Live's slowness by making the game more arcade-like than previous versions. I'm still looking forward to playing it though.

I'd rather a game be "too arcadey" then to drudge through a game like NBA Live 2001, where you're shooting in the 20's and 30's, the players don't react to the controls, and your opponent is able to get more offensive boards than your defensive boards.

I've been watching the CPU play itself in Live 2001 (PC) to get some stat files to test out the scripts on my web site, and it's really pathetic... (I can't even bring myself to pick up the controller on this game anymore, so I let the CPU play itself!)The computer plays so slow. Doesn't move the ball around, just stands there and dribbles until the shot clock is about to run out, and then fires up a bad shot with the last guy you'd want to shoot the ball. The shooting percentages consistently fall in the 20's and 30's, and as a result, the scores on 6 minute quarters are rediculously low.

Live 2003 may not be hyper-realistic, but I will settle for it being fun. In the meantime, I'm back playing Live 2000.

Re: Since when did ARCADE become a 4-letter word?

Well I've always hated arcade type NBA games or any sports game for that matter. Not my thing and never will be but that goes for everything. I'll take Tekken over Street Fighter any day. I like realism. But that's not the point.

The point is Live like all EA titles have been praised for the "Simulation" of the real sport. Hell, their slogan is even "If it's in the game, it's in the game." the 2k series was a different type of the same model. The idea is they are putting out SIMULATION games which even in these games that I speak of is notably different than ARCADE games. So when a SIMULATION game plays more like an ARCADE game people get pissed b/c that's not what they are looking for.

I don't think you hear people that bought Street Ball complaining b/c it was too arcade like.

I'd rather a game be "arcady" than a game that artificially slows the pace down. With realistic sims there is only one way to play it delibirate and slow, not very fun if you ask me. If you want a slow game, then bring the ball up slowly and play defense. I've yet to play live 03 or 2k3, but i hated both games last year due to the fact that it was slow and cumbersome something real basketball isn't.

i've said it once and i will say it again and again, if you can go baseline to baseline in a game in 2 seconds then the game is moving tooo fast to be a simulation people act like the nba is one pass and shot or everybody alwayls pushing the ball up the floor, just becuase you can't go coast to coast in 2 seconds does not make a game slow. IMHO

this word "arcade" or "arcadey"offically has become the word to use for Live cuz a couple people used it and now people took it and ran with it. wow.
