    SVG pissed @ Shaq?

    Coach: Stop blame, complaints
Negative comments by Shaq and others irk Van Gundy.

    By Tom D'Angelo

    Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

    Wednesday, January 26, 2005

TORONTO — Shaquille O'Neal's complaints about teammates missing open shots in Monday's loss at Philadelphia were not well-received by Heat coach Stan Van Gundy.

Van Gundy said the Heat's problems go beyond shooting and start with defense, rebounding and effort.
In other words, three areas in which O'Neal has been inconsistent this season.

"That's the wrong thing to be talking about,'' Van Gundy said about the perimeter shooting. "There are nights the ball goes in, there are nights the ball doesn't go in. The problem with us over the last three weeks is we haven't consistently played hard enough or with enough energy.''

O'Neal insists he was not pointing fingers specifically when he said a player must take it personally when his man leaves him to double-team. The criticism could have been aimed at Eddie Jones (3-of-12) or Damon Jones (2-of-6). Dwyane Wade missed 10 of his 13 shots but played the final two quarters after spraining his left ankle and bruising his left knee. Wade missed Tuesday's practice and the knee could prevent him from playing against the Raptors tonight. Wade said he is day to day.

"I didn't call my team out,'' O'Neal said. "I said when a guy like Dwyane is hurt, he kicks the ball out, we have to hit shots. That's all I said. I'm not in the business of calling my team out. We all need to play better. That's what I said."

O'Neal scored 24 points but had just five rebounds, missed 11-of-17 free throws and allowed Sixers center Samuel Dalembert, who is 2 inches shorter and 70 pounds lighter, to have 16 points and 11 rebounds.

    Defense, rebounding and effort.

"When we get our focus on those things, on making effort and on playing harder and defending better and rebounding better and doing all those things rather than saying it's all about shooting, then we'll be headed in the right direction,'' Van Gundy said.

"Quit looking for all the different excuses and places to point the finger. Point it at ourselves and be responsible and go out and get the job done.''

None of O'Neal's teammates would publicly say he's calling out any one individual, but they all agree that this team has lost something.

"Guys really don't read into it,'' Wade said. "I mean, Shaq, without him saying anything, we all understand that we have to do that. I think guys know that.''

Van Gundy, attempting to keep his team from unraveling, addressed the situation before Tuesday's practice. Miami (30-13) has seen its lead in the Eastern Conference and Southeast Division shrink to 3 1/2 games over Washington. Since winning 14 straight, the Heat is 5-6.

"December is long gone now and over the month of January we have been a very mediocre to below mediocre team and we've got to accept that and work to change it,'' Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy does not want to hear O'Neal implying that he paces himself or Wade saying Tuesday the Heat's slump is common.

"There comes a point in the season where everyone goes through the times that we're going through right now,'' Wade said.

Van Gundy does not sound as convinced.

"We need to get back to playing harder for longer on a more consistent basis every night,'' he said. "Until we do that we will be what we've been the last three weeks. If we're not going to make more effort than the people we play against then we'll stay right where we've been.''

--------------------------------------------------------------------------This is what Phil should have done, squash it before it got bad.
“It’s so senseless to me to say he shouldn’t take over like that. You give the same amount of shots to everybody else and they’re not making that many, I know it.”

Great comments by Van Gundy. He handled the situation perfectly and let Shaq know that his comments were out of line.

This never happened with the Lakers. Shaq was always allowed to point fingers at everyone else and that's what he did.

i mean serious, if your teammate is shooting crappily its not like they are missing them on purposes, plus comments like these should be kept in the locker room

you dont publicly comment on teammates like that, i mean i wouldnt be surprised if both the jones or even wade made comments attacking back at shaq, fortunately they didn't but shaq just put himself in a position that could have created rifts between his teammates, and it probably has

stan van gundy did the right thing saying shaq was wrong, and thats the type of thing in lakerland where there was no one to say no to shaq, where everyone supported everything the guy said, ultimately lead to the implosion of lakers

and this perfectly shows shaq's laziness too, this talk about coasting, why would you EVER coast? it bothers me that professional atheletes would ever even thinka bout doing things like this, "coasting" getting paid millions i'd haul my butt every night

i like svg's view, and finally its nice to see someone other than other players finally humbling shaq a little, showing shaq he cant just point fingers at others when he's as much as part of the problem

And it's not like shaq has a pefect game, going 6-17 from the line and only pulling down 5 boards!!! He also allowed Dalembert to score 16pts and grap 11 rebs.

He then turns around and blame his team mates !!!?

Look at odom last night taking the blame for our loss cause the team gave up too many Off. rebounds and second cahnce points among other things....That's a classy player.

            Shaq needs to grow up.

No argument here, but then again, I lost my love for Shaq when he slimmed down after forcing his trade. When the other team's center has his career night against you, that's on you. The outside shot is a low percentage shot, even when left wide open, but rebounding is all about desire and Shaq is guilty of not having that desire during the season. That's what may hurt this team in the playoffs, when the team has a poor shooting night or two, and Shaq decides to coast. This is only the beginning of the Heat's problems if that is the case. Maybe Shaq's daddy can get some quotes in the paper calling Eddie Jones (a classy guy) out like he did in LA.

The writer is right about one thing especially, that is how Van Gundy reacted clearly points the finger at Shaq. Something only Tex Winters had the heart to do in Lakerland.

I saw those comments yesterday and created a thread, but my server was dropped and I lost everything. Glad to see SVG step up, and squash that crap. Shaq rips EJ for going 3-12 instead of addressing it man to man like a mature team leader...all the while giving his new pal "Flash" kudos when Wade goes 3-13 (with 6 turnovers)

And this guy wants a trillion dollar extension. Good luck.

                        Re: SVG pissed @ Shaq?

WTF. Shaq rarely blamed others on LA. He only complained b/c someone else was forcing 30 shots. And Dalembert DID NOT have a career night. He had 24-16 rebounds the very next night. So that is not outside of what Dalembert can do. And chances are Dalembert got his points b/c shaq was helping a teammate taht got beat of the dribble, so Dalembert got a rebound off a miss Shaq forced by rotating, or else Dalember got an easy pass for a score when Shaq had to rotate. I didn't see the game, but that's usually how other centers get points, b/c it's hard to score buckets on Shaq b/c of his size and athleticism, and he pushes centers out of the paint. And Eddie Jones does need to step up, he's been b8ll sh8t all year. Everybody on that team knows it to. Perhaps Jones wasn't getting the message, via lockerroom, and the only option left was to single him out b/c nothing else was working. Truth is, Eddie's been missing wide open shots for a looong time now, it's really getting ridiculous. Oh, shaq had 33 and 18 tonight, and Eddie stepped up, so it looks like Shaq singling out Eddie worked anyway.

Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.
