    1. a fastbreak team scores pretty quickly and this give the other team more opportunities for possesion than they would get against playing a team like the spurs because the spurs take quite a bit of time on offense
    2. They expend more energy on offense than half court teams so as a result their defense will suffer
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

It cant be done on a Pro level ask the Celtics a few years back when they tried to run Kentucky's press in the Pros. Its too hard to maintain that level of pressure on D while pushing it up the floor on offense. The Suns are the best example of this today... they wont stop anyone so they run you right out of the Gym. If you miss on D they run if you hit a shot they run, turnovers, timeouts, but at no time are they looking to stop you. Thier best D is thier O they put up so many 3s it makes you shoot them to keep up long rebounds equals easy transition O.

I don't know about all of that. If they can't or aren't looking to stop anybody on defence, than most of the league isn't. Pretty much all of their defensive statistics, other than totals inflated by the pace of their games, are middle of the road.

Re: Avery Johnson is changing the Mavs identity.

I think that a the only true obstacle to running a true fastbreak offense is stamina. If everyone on your team is in good running shape and the team is deep, its as simple as everyone running full throttle at all times - made baskets, missed freethrows, rebounds, inbounds, EVERYTHING. The only team that does this is the phoenix suns right now, even Dallas at their offensive height were not completely devoted to the idea.

Once the ball is in play, the ballhandler should look up and try to advance the ball with the pass rather than dribble it up. This type of offense contstantly pressures the defesne, creating mismatches and advantages for the offense. If the defense gets back, you then look for the secondary break, and then if thats not their go into a motion offense and try to feed the post. With the right personnel, this is an unbeatable strategy IMO. The defensive risk you take is that the opposing team will then look up the floor once you score and create a mismatch of their own while your players get back on D, but if this style persists then the team who uses it consistently will prevail.

What the Celtics did a few years back (and believe me I do remember) was NOT fastbreak basketball. That was a college gimmick and pitino was a moron. You dont have to press to play uptempo.

In order to run you need a couple 2 basic things: Someone (or preferably more 2 people) to control the boards - because you cant run without the ball - and a team that is willing to run. The biggest problem today is that athletes arent committed to it.

Oh and also, you can't have one of these team defensive schemes. You have to play a simple man defense and your players have to be good individual defenders for the most part, with an anchor in the middle. The reason people say defense wins championships and that running teams dont play it, is because in today's NBA teams play zone type defenses with lots of rotations, and these have to be organized before the offense sets up. They dont combine well with fastbreak ball.
