A shell of himself probably not but nobody is talking about him being a shell of himself. You’re acting like there is no lost progression, or that it’s silly to pick Ja at this point knowing what we know now. Ja is winning games, in MVP talks, voted to the AS as a starter based on his play not popularity.. this dude misses the rest of this season (which he will) and he’s only played 3 more games than Oden did in his first 3 years. I think you’re underplaying just how much time he’s missed and how big these injuries have held him back.

Even if he comes back 100% exactly what he was he’s still lost like 100 games of progression towards being that “franchise” level guy that he hasn’t even shown he can be yet. Getting double teams on a bottom tier team isn’t really what they drafted him for and doesn’t necessarily showcase him being a franchise altering player. He’s missed more games at this point than he’s played and that number has been climbing since December.

I think everybody hopes he comes back and looks his best when he does but you have to realize that isn’t realistic at this point? I don’t think anybody is ruling it out or calling him damaged goods but you’ve got basically the same odds right now if him being Oden as you do him being that “next LeBron” level player because he’s not even having the chance to develop into that type of player.

He’s 3 years into his career and hasn’t even had the chance to adjust to the speed of the game yet. Even his good games like the highlight you posted is just him getting into the lane throwing the ball towards the rim and crashing the offensive glass in case it’s a miss. He’s doesn’t have that natural “feel” a lot of other guys either just have or have developed. Guys like Ball, Ja, Giddey, Cade, Garland, Luka, Trae, you don’t speed them or slow them down. They have that control, pace, understanding of how to control the game in that sense. Not saying he had to have that at the level of those guys considering his raw athletic gifts but how long do we expect those to be tier 1 level when he’s blowing his legs out at this rate already?

I don’t think anybody thinks he’s going to step back on the court and just not remember how to play basketball. But even at his best he wasn’t “THAT GUY” yet, he’s not going to miraculously be better now after missing all this time, having set back after set back, and stuck playing for some team he doesn’t even want to play for.

Like I keep saying. Call me in year 5. That's when I'll be on board with this kind of talk.

Alternatively, I think it was SVG that said he's played 3 times as many games as Embiid to this point so there's that. Do the advanced stat comparison between Zion last year and Ja this year.

Basically, anything other than Zion looking in tip-top shape/playing great next year means Pelicans have to move him. Can't justify a max extension on a guy showing this apparent lack of commitment (from everything out there in the media etc.). This isn't a charity.

I'm not betting against him (yet), but like jfsolo said, I'm not sure he wants to be that guy for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Thing is, with Embiid I never got the impression he wasn't trying to be on the court; he just happened to be hurt.

Zion feels like he is going ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, "I'll get to it when I get to it"

Oh well, whenever you feel like it, your highness.

On the other side though, no way in hell would I trade for him until I see him play for an extended period of time.

Jevon Carter was waived in the process.

He's a good backup PG option for a contender. I wouldn't mind taking a chance on him as opposed to a backup Center, if there isn't a surprised athletic wing buyout.

So much for the whole "Dragic wants to go to the Mavs, the Mavs want him, but they won't deal with the Raptors because they'll just pick him up after the Raptors buy him out"

More than once, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has talked about his life being a movie. The latest scene in that movie comes from an MVP-like 36 points in the NBA All-Star Game.

                        Ironically Embiid today lol

"Basically you miss two years in a row and all these stories coming out every single day -- Joel is, whatever, 300 pounds -- and the media always talking down on you. It was tough. I had to go through a lot. It was very tough, but, I'm glad I just kept pushing through with the help of everybody around me. I'm just glad. I'm happy to be here."

I think the difference here is this was a concern with Zion in the eyes of many before he even had a single injury. His weight, play-style, and natural gate to just how he walked had people questioning if he was sustainable even if they didn't' assume the injuries would happen this quickly.

And even with Embiid he has a bit of a gimpy gate too when he's jogging up the floor. He still moves really well overall, and for a guy his size with his footwork, shooing touch, and length that is perfectly fine. Zion can never just move "really well" and be a franchise altering piece. He almost has to be a world class athlete, he's 6'6 and incredibly overweight without a jumpshot. If he's not a freak athlete where does that leave him?

And I think Jeebs is just assuming I'm saying he's done, I don't believe that at all and definitely hope it isn't the case as well. But even Zion at his best that we have seen so far he doesn't have an outside shot, mid range game, can't make free-throws, hasn't learned the pace of the game, hasn't been great at passing out of those double teams and making decisions with the ball, is still a bad defender, and hasn't been the double-double rebounding threat we all assumed he would be either.. Most boxes that Embiid was checking even if he had the perceived lower upside. So not only is there a health concern, but he's obviously not developing all of those areas he's already behind in while he's stuck rehabbing. And now it seems he's not even interested in playing for the team he's on, where as Embiid obviously had a high level of motivation to get back and prove the "process" was worth it.

I'm not saying we don't need to wait and see still, or that when he hits year 8 like Embiid he can't be playing at a super high level. Nobody can know that whether you think he's damaged goods or a future MVP.. So I'm not trying to be some guy predicting the future. I'm just saying Ja is that guy right now, so I don't get why Jeebs is jumping on people for saying they would take him in a redraft. We don't even need to wait and see with him, he's doing it now. And even with Zion healthy we have nothing to show that he's near that caliber of a player because he wasn't quite there even at his best.
