Glad she, or anybody in a similar situation could be freed… but this sums up what should be almost anybody’s general thoughts on this particular situation.

Russian arms dealer who was ultimately convicted for conspiracy to kill US citizens and officials. Supposedly smuggled weapons to Al Qaeda, Taliban, and rebels in Rwanda too… but no need to worry, we are all about gun control over here now.

      NBA Off Topic Thread

      If that’s anyone’s main argument (“They left a Marine!”)then:

      A. You’re already not approaching the topic in good faith(It’s similar to the people always going “Why don’t they ever talk about Brett Favre?”). Because there’s a lot more context that goes into, which people know but they choose to leave that out.

      B. You have very limited to no knowledge on the subject in particular outside of what you see/hear on FB from and have no idea how these type of prisoner exchanges/negotiations work.

      C. You don’t care about that and you’re being performative, which is what a lot of people are doing, today.

Glad she’s out but I also this whole thing could’ve been avoided. Honestly wouldn’t have felt a way if she had to do the 9 years(No, this isn’t me saying she deserved to stay or deserved her punishment).

Check out the movie Lord of War with Nicolas Cage.

The character he played is pretty much based on the person they sent to Russia.

The swap really didn't make any sense but whatever. Nothing has since that geriatric fool has taken office.

I hope athletes take heed in this. I remember when Liangelo Ball and a few players from the UCLA team got in trouble overseas shoplifting.

Don't **** around overseas. They don't play around. And definitely not Russia. Of all places. I wouldn't smuggle a thumbtack out of there.

Not saying it needs to be anybody's main argument, or that there even needs to be an argument over him/her.. But more so Russia has been trying to get him out for years and ultimately we bend on a basketball player while we have a marine still in custody. Obviously more context, obviously more to prisoner exchange than that, obviously some people being performative and will keep doing so and are just looking for those types of arguments.. None of that changes how much of a "really" it feels that we traded somebody conspiring to terroristic threats for someone who plays ball. And that is ignoring that (regardless of how stupid the punishment was) she was guilty.

I get 100% it was likely bring her home or nobody home.. But it's like yall won't give us the spy for anything, but here you can have yours back for a basketball player.. You or I would 100% still be stuck over there, she's basically coming home because she's in the 0.0001% height bracket for women.

Well man. I mean I just can't with people that do stupid **** like that. Nobody should be imprisoned for a little hashish oil. We all know that was politically motivated. And wrong.

But with everything going on in Russia right now. I mean c'mon man. What were you thinking? Really. I'm not giving her a pat on the back for making a international incident out of this.

The whole thing could have easily been avoided. Glad the saga is over and I'm sure Russia was thrilled it happened too. Smh.

Some of the memes have been funny though lol. Saw a couple earlier that said something along the lines of:

“We traded a shooter for a big, could have at least gotten a couple draft picks”

“This is the first time anyone has been aware of a WNBA trade”

                  There are more lol.

He changed up his stance on the rule subject a few hours later after someone with knowledge on the situation have him background info on this happen. I can't find the tweet right now.

                      Re: NBA Off Topic Thread

I saw his other tweets earlier, idk that he changed up his stance or more so apologized for how insensitive his initial tweet sounded to Griner/her family. Which I think is good, his tweet had no mention of her and I think warranted an apology for the same reasons I started my post with saying I was glad she was coming home too.

I still don’t agree with his edited part saying if everything he’s been told is true that this was the “best outcome”.. that doesn’t make any sense. We gave them what they wanted but won’t give us all that we wanted. How is that the best outcome? It’s not like the issue is Whelan vs Griner, it’s that they won’t give up Whelan but we will give them their military equivalent of that.. any one of us in this group would still be stuck over there, she plays basketball so she’s home. That’s the part that is annoying. I think Pack assumed I was coming from another angle, but that’s not what annoys me.

And like Pack said famous people get special treatment, I understand that that. I’m not ignoring that, but that’s the part I think is stupid. How much people here in America will prop up an Athlete, movie star, singer, trust fund babies, or in special cases like Hilton/Kardashian just for releasing a tape. Like these people don’t have any more worth than any of us just because they have fans.. Your wife Jeebs, would still be there, my wife would still be there. How is that not a gigantic slap in the face.

And while you expect the fans to be fans and have those weird obsessions, it’s 100% not the responsibility of our government to dabble into fandom like that. Like I said, I’m glad she’s back but this just sends a message that she’s more important than the other 99% of us.

And as harsh as it sounds we can’t pretend there aren’t also different levels to being famous, and what you do with that status. If this were Serena Williams in her place for example. Who donates her time, money, to various charities, awareness/research for HIV, sends under privileged kids to school, and various other work all around the globe.. like that would make sense, she’s shown value above what most humans do/are capable of doing. What is Griner contributing to society other than whining constantly that she doesn’t make LeBron money?

Idk. I understand this isn’t nearly as big of a deal as it’s become online. And me typing this much about it makes it seem like I care much more about it than I actually do believe it or not. These posts are actually the only time/thought I’ve given the subject. Its just the whole situation is an annoyance dating back to when it first started and she was “forced” to go there because she doesn’t make mega millions like the NBA. And then the comments about how this was the best that could be done or whatever. Like I said, I’m glad she’s back, I’m happy for her, I wish any American stuck away from home for whatever reason can come home. Ultimately it likely effects nothing. It’s just like we give them what they won’t give us because she’s “famous”.. obviously the whole situation played this out to be some Griner vs Whelan thing online, nobody’s well-being is more important than anybody else’s, so that type of argument isn’t fair and why some of the online back and forth has gotten so ugly.

Sometimes, It’s ok to not give an opinion on a subject you have no knowledge on. And that’s why a majority of the online back and forth had been going on.

All I’ll say is people just need to go read some books and educate themselves, especially on subjects like this.

Sounds like Russia wasn't willing to talk this entire time. From the details leaked out a few moments ago.

It just sucks. For her, she just went some where to play basketball. Never meant to be part of all this ****.

No, I don't think that will happen. Will she play in that league again. Hell No. Which is sad in a way. She going to bed a lot of help after this.
