Tips for beating the CPU in Live 2003

There are a few things you can do in live to get 1up on the computer and I've made a little list. There is more defensive than offensive but we all know defense wins games.

    1. Take the charge: I found out a way to draw a charge alot, especially when u need to get the ball.
Whenever the Cpu post u up, hitting the take charge button will knock u on the floor resulting in a Off foul 50% of the time. This works great when u try to defend big post players, especially Shaq. and it will get him in foul troble quicker.
But it does'nt work all the time because some times you'll fall on your *** and give him a free 2 points so use at your own risk.

    2. Put your hands up: putting your hands up on defense with the anologe up button dramaticly changes the chance that the shot will go in. If you time it just right it will help u out throughout the course of the game.

    3. Play good D: Use the anolog down alot when playing D because its much harder for the Cpu to get past u and if u got a player with a lock under him u can follow his every movement exactly the way the computer plays D on u.
And of course u can use the hands up method alot easier and will get the hang of it.

    4. Dont Reach: Reaching for the steal constantly will get u burnt constantly. After your steal attemp, next thing u know he's heading to the hole for a layup or dunk. So lay off the steals until u really need em. A player with a lock under him has a better chance of getting that steal just when u need 1. Plus it will get u in foul troble before u know it.

    5. Set double Teams: I dont care who your playing against, always at the beggining of each game set a double team on the top scorer(s). It will make them give the ball up alot to some one else and they will miss more shots the attemp because of two people sticking em. Although they still will score thier average they will have to work much harder to get it and u wont really feel like he burning your entire team but that he earned those points.

Offense. Every one should know how to play offense but for those of u out there still losing this may come in helpful.

    1. Run the pick n roll: This play is very, very effective if u use it. U can do either 1 or 2 things-- 1 is go past the pick and pop one soon as u get past. a average defender will jump but be a few feet away which gives u clear sight of the basket.
-----2 is to follow the pick and when your big man puts his hand up, throw him the ball and he should be in the paint, head fake and 7times out of ten the defender will jump. U finish the rest.

    2. Jump for the rebound: Alot of players seem to complain that they cant get a offensive rebound when all u have to do is when u shoot the ball switch to the man near the paint and jump. Its that simple. If he is in the right postion the board is his.

    3. The head fake: One thing I noticed in this game is that if u sit there and keep head faking, eventualy the man will jump.
Its not as easy as in the last 2 versions but works almost the same. This by far is a cheap method to score easy points.
I rarely use it UNLESS I really need to score.

    4. Icon passing: if you dont use icon passing by now u most either be new to the game or just slow. Its the only way I pass in the halfcourt offense. Draw the double team in the post and wait for that open man, use icon passing to get to him. I cant tell u how many timesI try to pass it manually to the open and man and it goes to the wrong guy.

well thats all I can think off for now but feel free to add you own tips or correct anything I've posted here.
These tips work for me alot so dont complain if u still get burned by the CPU.

Interestingly enough, all of these things are easy to execute. A simple button or move of the joystick. The fun comes in putting the whole thing together. You feel like you are in the NBA and you have to execute the proper play to be successful.

Here's something: If you have a 1-on-3 break------wait for your teammates to come up court before you attempt a shot. If you miss, you'll at least have a chance at an offensive rebound.

Thats right, I almost forgot about the playbook. I use 3 diffrent plays in 3 diffrent sets per half. But i felt it was no need to put that as a tip because it all depends on how u play the game whereas the tips above are universal.

If you have a 4 or 5 that can shoot a good 15 footer, the 1-4 High set is great. It will put them at the high blocks.

If you have a taller 3 such as Garnett or Dirk, the Box 8 will put them on the low block. you can post up if you have a size advantage. If you have a quickness advantage, let the play set up some more and your 3 will rotate to the opposite high block. Then you can take your defender off the dribble.

Get the ball in Triple Threat with your best ball handler on the wing.

            Call an Isolation.

Go into a Triple Threat hold position.

Call for a Pick and Roll.

Move the left analog in the direction the pick is coming from and hold it.

Release the right analog when the pick is set and you will bust hard in a Dynamic move right around the pick.

If you do this fast enough (IE before the ISO times out and your players start to move bringing their defenders back into the lane) you will have a really good chance at taking it hard to the hole.

If by chance the D switches right away off the pick and roll just press pass and the pass always goes to the big man rolling to the basket for an easy score.

Works really well when you get the hang of it.

Great thread! Let's see, what else?. When you post up, don't dribble. Hold your position, then spin baseline and either shoot or pump-fake and up-and-under. If you hold instead of dribbling, the CPU is less likely to double-team straight away. BTW, I love the Box set. Great plays in there for every position.

Lol. If your serious, try to make smart passes - there are some great tips above about that. Try to draw the double team and passing to the open guy. Go to the basket alot - if you don't score, you most likely will draw a double team. Then you can kick it out to a shooter on the perimeter for a wide-open 3 or deep 2.

Also, don't let up even if you're leading by 10, 15, or even 20. The CPU always chucks 3's to try to come back and will double team the ball. Keep making smart passes, driving to the hoop, and drawing fouls to keep you ahead. DEFENSE IS THE KEY TO WINNING though. Use the defensive tips as seen in the other posts above and you will win more frequently

Re: Tips for beating the CPU in Live 2003

If you take your man and double someone down in the post, if the offensive player is someone who more than likely is going to pass the ball back out rather than take the shot, then go back out to the man you left open-----but, only go about 3/4ths of the way back out. This will give you a better chance of stealing the ball because you are in the passing lane. If you go all the back out to the man, then by the time you can reach to steal the ball, he has received the pass.

The fade away jumper is a deadly weapon.

Icon passing: Triangle = Center, Square = Power Forward, X= Small Foward, and Circle = Shooting Guard. The Point Guard's Icon will be represented by the icon of whomever he passes the ball to. So if your point guard passes to the Center, the PG now becomes the Triangle icon.

Never throw an alley-oop with a bad passer no matter how wide open the man in the lane is. I've given too many souvenir balls to fans in the stands that way.

Learn how to follow the ball if and/or when you use the zone defense.

Use the half court trap with less than two seconds on game or shot clock and the CPU is inbounding the ball from midcourt or the frontcourt sideline.

If you have a good big man, give him the ball down on the block and call for an isolation. It will take a couple more seconds for the D to double-team, and even longer for them to get back to their man if you swing the ball around the perimeter.

Try to defend the man with the ball in the post the majority of the time because often times your teammate will not try to block the shot.

                      When in doubt, flop.

Offensive rebounding is huge in this game. I pulled off a 16 pointcome from behind victory because of my ability to rebound on the offensive side. I pulled down 13, which is about what you would see in a game. The more i play this game the more i realize you have to use that thing between your ears to win. Not like the old Lives, where the computer would bail you out, you have to do it yourself.

                            What else does it do?

                            This is a great thread.

I am still having big fun playing Live. I got schooled by the Mav's in my Pistons season. Then the hornets spanked the pistons at home three days later. The pacers are two wins ahead in the Central. I face them six games away. I need to make a good run, I have 3 of 5 at home before facing them.

I love the charge button, but has anyone figured out how to take a charge against the dribble penetration? I can get them on post ups, but when the CPU tries to take me off the dribble, I'd like to be able to get in front and take the charge. Haven't figured out how to do it yet. BTW, getting in the defensive crouch is the best way to play D. The CPU will sometimes just bump into you, losing the ball, but also, there's a higher chance of him missing the shot.
