Re: 10/24 - 11/6 Games Discussion Thread
Kyrie and Luka duo still looks a little awkward together.. which doesn’t make sense because Kidd coached LeBron and has a **** ton of successful tape to look back on from Bron and Kyrie in Cleveland.
THJ was a couple made shots away from looking really good tonight. I guess you could say that about anybody’s makes/misses but he just looked healthy and good.
Not a fan of that decelerated shooting foul Luka was able to draw late. I find it odd a guy can just stop and stand on his pivot for as long as he wants and wait on contact but it be considered a “shooting” foul just because he never took another step. Just one of those weird loopholes that happens to be “legal” technically but looks like BS in real time. To me if you’re intentionally stopping your shooting motion to wait on a whistle that’s a foul on the floor because at no point are you trying for continuation, you’re basically avoiding continuation.Comment

Sure it may have "ruined" his debut but I'm glad they called it straight. It will probably speed up that adjustment process for him.
As for Dallas, I just don't like how their team is built. Lively looked great, and I even think Kyrie and Luka could be a nice pairing, but I don't like Hardaway on this team.Comment

But he's not stopping his shooting motion, he never starts it until he feels the trail defender on his back. Its no different from when the athletic slashers hop step into the paint then pump fake before going up with it.Comment

Re: 10/24 - 11/6 Games Discussion Thread
I understand that, I just don’t like the play in general. Feels like it’s gimmicky and taking advantage of rules in place. Not blaming Luka, I just think it’s one of those James Harden like plays that needs to be looked at.
I don’t consider it the same as a pump fake. If Luka stopped and pump faked I wouldn’t take issue with it because the pump fake gives him a reason to stop his dribble. And he would come to an actual stop. Not some free pause that wouldn’t otherwise exist other than deliberately trying to shoot as slow as possible.
Just feels like if you’re deliberately slowing your shooting motion but not actually wanting to plant on the foot you’re just forcing yourself to be stationary just long enough to make a defender hit you. He doesn’t “stop” his shooting motion but he deliberately slows it to stay grounded. If you’re going to force yourself to stay on the floor to get contact I believe the foul should be on the floor.. that’s just my thoughts.
Basically if you’re allowing a player to just stop without shooting, passing, coming to a true “stop” to pivot, pump fake, etc, you’re basically telling defenders they have to just stop trying to defend the play. Because momentum forces the contact by default. You can’t avoid it. To me that’s no different that jumping backwards/sideways on a three pointer to force contact. But I understand it’s currently legal, wouldn’t be easy to enforce because you can’t really tell a player “how” to shoot, and I realize Luka does it all the time. (That’s part of my annoyance with it).
They literally just implemented a rule to keep players doing that in the open court either last year or the year before by stopping in front of guys while dribbling, but in the half court they’ll reward it as a shooting foul. It blurs the lines of what should/shouldn’t be allowed IMO.Comment

Its functionally a pump fake.
I agree with you when guys stop or slow down and then lean into the defensive player to create the foul but Luka doesn't here. If you pause the video at 4:11 you see the defender clearly leaves his feet way too soon and Luka notices that and says "oh okay, I got you now." You saw him point to his head at the end of the play. It is avoidable, the defender can not leave his feet too early.
Its okay to admit that you just don't like Luka lolComment

When have I not liked Luka [emoji23] if anything everything I've said as it pertains to Luka is a compliment to his insane footwork, timing, and awareness.
Watching it in slow mo replay it definitely looks like Luka is going into a shot at the point of contact much more than it appeared in real time. So I'll admit maybe last nights play isn't a perfect example. But my general point is that if a player deliberately breaks his natural progression into a shot to stay on the floor I believe the foul should be on the floor. I understand he left he's feet and all that, I'm not arguing no foul should be called.Last edited by ojandpizza; 10-26-2023, 10:02 AM.Comment

Especially early on with so many more minutes can be played later in the year. But knowing his coaching style this will probably last the first few months.
But I think he wants all their effort to be defensive focused. Last night we were right there. But we couldn't get one stop. I thought they did an amazing job right up until that shot [emoji23].Hands Down....Man Down - 2k9 memories

I have a feeling that some teams might opt to play guys fewer minutes this year, outside of Thibbs lol. With the new load management rules, I can see teams deciding to play guys fewer minutes a game in order to minimize guys having scheduled rest days. I can see more 12-13 man rotations to start the year and then playoff rotations start forming around MarchHands Down....Man Down - 2k9 memories

Re: 10/24 - 11/6 Games Discussion Thread
Hell, I love to see Embiid play under 32 minutes for most of the year, then ramp up for Playoffs in March. They have 4 centers on the roster, might as well use them lol.
But, that was a problem with the Sixers last year. The goal was to stagger and always have either Harden or Maxey on the court. But that meant they were playing 38-40 minutes a night. Then Embiid was playing the 38 minutes as well. I rather shrink the minutes if that means they'll play more games and less nightly toll on bodiesComment
