Dallas Mavericks Notes / Mar. 23, 2005: Typical starters: Jason Terry and Michael Finley at guard, Josh Howard and Dirk Nowitzki at forward, and Shawn Bradley at center. Erick Dampier, the normal center starter, continues to miss time on the injured list. Jerry Stackhouse, a star off the bench, also remains injured... On 3/19, prior to the game vs. Charlotte, the “Little General” Avery Johnson was named Head Coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Although the win against the Bobcats marked the first game to officially count towards his coaching record, Johnson had already served as head coach 13 times this season with the wins and losses going towards Don Nelson’s career totals. While Nelson recovered from shoulder surgery from 1/20 through 2/6, Johnson guided the team to a 7-3 mark. More recently, Johnson served as head coach for three games (2-1 mark) from 3/10 through 3/13 while Nelson attended to his wife who had just gone through surgery. All totaled, Dallas is now 11-4 in games in which Avery Johnson has served as acting head coach (2-0 since officially taking over for Nelson)... The differences between the 15 games Avery Johnson has coached and the 51 games Don Nelson coached have been minor so far. Johnson’s Mavericks average 100.1 points (1501) while giving up 94.9 ppg (1423). Nellie’s Mavericks averaged 103.0 points while giving up 98.6 ppg. Two players who have averaged better numbers in the games Johnson coached are Erick Dampier and Jason Terry. In 10 games under Johnson, Dampier has averaged 10.3 points, 13.1 rebounds and 1.90 blocks in 30.3 minutes per game compared to averages of 9.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.13 blocks in 26.9 minutes per game under Nelson. Terry has averaged 14.0 points (206 total) and 7.0 assists (105 total) in 34.7 minutes per game (520 total) under Johnson compared to 12.0 points and 4.7 assists in 28.1 minutes per game under Nelson. On the flip side, Michael Finley averaged 18.1 points per game under Nelson compared to 14.0 points (210 total) under Johnson. Josh Howard’s averages have also been lower in his 12 games coached by Johnson (10.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 25.3 mpg compared to 13.1 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 34.6 mpg w/Nelson
but Howard was not 100% in many of those games so the numbers are a bit skewed... After 66 games, Dallas has already held 15 opponents under 40.0% shooting from the floor (15-0 mark). All of last season, the Mavericks only had nine games in which they held their opponent under 40.0% shooting and Dallas won all but one of those games (11/6/03 at Toronto). The Mavericks have held the opposition under 90 points 16 times this season (15-1 mark) after doing so just 12 times in 2003-04 (11-1 mark). .
