    Draft order??

Can someone explain to me the system because I'm unsure of something.

Is the draft order based purely off record? So, it doesn't matter where a team is seeded or goes in the playoffs?

    Thanks

Also, if base on record, what about teams with identical records?

    Re: Draft order??

The non-playoff teams are in the lottery to determine draft position (This was done so the Rockets didnt get Patrick Ewing to go with Olajuwon and Sampson) and the other teams draft based on record with tiebreakers if theres teams with identical records.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

      Thanks.

So it's kind of in 2 sections. Playoff teams and non-playoff teams?

For example, if the 3rd seed had a record of say 32-50 in the weakest division where all below them were worse (5 lowest records in the league), the 3rd seed would cop the 15th pick compared to the 5th if they didn't make the playoffs.

      Is that right?

        Re: Draft order??

Lets see if I can explain this..

Basically there are 14 lottery picks. Those 14 lottery picks go to the 14 teams that do not make it to the playoffs.

When those 14 teams are determined, they have a lottery (normally around the finals) Any of those 14 teams, no matter they're record, would get random picks. For instance, Atlanta even though they have the worst record, might get the number 14th pick in the draft. Or the Wolves (who would just miss out on the playoffs) might get the number 1 pick.

However, the team with the worst record, has more of a chance of getting a higher pick then a team like the Wolves.

After those 14 picks are decided, 16 other picks are determined by the teams record.

        Get it?

Yeahm so it's what I said above.

A 3rd seed with a shocking record in a shocking division would get pick 15 instead of say a top 10 pick.

Thanks for the help guys. Was just curious.

Not totally correct Atlanta would fall as far 4 not 14th...

There are 8 teams in each conference that make the playoffs, for a total of 16 playoff teams. All teams who do not make the playoffs are eligible for the lottery (in the 2003-2004 season, 13 of 29 teams missed the playoffs and are eligible for the lottery. Starting with the 2004-2005 season, there will be 30 teams with the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats, meaning there will be 14 teams eligible for the lottery).

14 balls are placed into a lotto machine, and 4 are drawn out. There are 1,001 possible ways, or combinations, for 4 balls to be drawn from 14 balls (the order each ball is drawn does not matter).

Each team in the lottery is assigned a certain number of combinations, such that teams with worse records are assigned more combinations increasing their odds of landing a top-3 pick. There are a total of 1,000 combinations that are assigned, one of the combinations does not belong to any team and the 4 balls are redrawn if it is encountered. Having 1,000 combinations makes it easier to calculate the probability of receiving the first pick in the draft.

The team representing the first valid 4-ball combination (the first combination that is not the discarded combination) receives the first pick in the draft. The team representing the next valid 4-ball combination (any combination not belonging to the team that received the first pick and not the discarded combination) receives the second pick in the draft. Finally, the team representing the next valid 4-ball combination receives the third pick in the draft.

The rest of the teams in the first round (including non-lottery teams) are awarded picks in ascending order of winning percentage.
