Why Can't the Lakers Play Defense?

I really don't get it. This is terrible. I'm tired of giving up 100+ points every freaking night. Does anyone know what the deal is? I thought going into this season that "ok we have some damn athletic two's and three's we're gonna shut people down defensively and create turnovers." Obviously this has not been the case. Why, why why?!? (If this turns into another Kobe flame fest I want this closed as soon as possible.)

I don't know man, I've wondered the same thing. Was it this bad when Rudy T was coaching? That could be the root, because they haven't been playing this bad all year.

Sadly, I can't remember the Rudy T era. It ended so friggin quickly. I'm pretty sure our turnovers have gone up and that lets teams get out and run on us. Our transition D is garbage. All the 3's we jack up too lead to long rebounds which lets teams run some more. So I guess it can be a number of things.

Perhaps my first two posts from this old thread can give you some direction on your question

It wasn't AS bad when Rudy was here. Of course we weren't the San Antonio Spurs, but we weren't exactly the Phoenix Suns on defense either.

I think now we have everybody so focused and worried on running the Triangle, that they use all their time in practice running that and now have NO defensive system.

I don't get it either. It's a sad sight to see. Maybe it is the triangle, or lack of practice, or individual laziness, but whatever it is, it's pathetic. We just can't stay in front of anyone, and anyone who moves the ball around destroys us. We should be able to be better at D, but we're not. The next coach, I hope is a defensive minded one.

I don't think it is all the coach's fault you also have to look at some of the players that are trying to play defense supposedly. Atkins, Butler, Grant, etc., aren't what I would call defensive stoppers.
