Meh...it's an article for AI nuthuggers to latch on to......
John Smallwood | Don't blame A.I. for lack of a title
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - When the final chapter is written, the 76ers probably will not have won an NBA championship with Allen Iverson.
And if at that time the Iverson detractors want to chirp that they said so all along, it will be their prerogative.
But they won't be able to make the argument that the Sixers' lack of hardware was due solely to the fact that they built a franchise around a 6-foot, 165-pound shooting guard.
As far as winning championships, the Sixers didn't make a mistake by selecting Iverson with the first overall pick in the 1996 draft. As far as having no gold rings, it won't be because the Sixers never traded Iverson for some other star player and moved the franchise into another direction.
The simple truth is that what has cost the Sixers a Larry O'Brien Trophy was not acquiring Shaquille O'Neal before Iverson arrived or Tim Duncan afterward. And neither of those options was ever available to the Sixers.
Having Iverson hasn't prevented the Sixers from winning a title over the last nine seasons; not having O'Neal or Duncan has. Except for the Chicago Bulls in their last two seasons with Michael Jordan and the Detroit Pistons last season, the five other champions during Iverson's career have been anchored by O'Neal and Duncan. Iverson has had the unfortunate circumstance of having his career coincide with three of the most dominant players in NBA history - Jordan, O'Neal and Duncan.
And with O'Neal and the Miami Heat the favorites to win the Eastern Conference and the Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs favorites in the West, it's likely that trend will continue in Iverson's ninth season.
So, if you're going to say the Sixers couldn't win a championship because they were built around a 6-foot shooting guard, then you must also say that the Utah Jazz couldn't win a championship because they were built around the best power forward in NBA history (Karl Malone) and one of the greatest point guards (John Stockton). Or that the New York Knicks couldn't win it all because they were built around an all-time center (Patrick Ewing). Or that Indiana Pacers couldn't win a championship because they built a great all-around team.
Once the Sixers didn't win the 1997 NBA lottery and the opportunity to draft Duncan to team with Iverson, any realistic chance they had of winning a title between went out the window. That would have been true even if the Sixers had traded Iverson, or never drafted him.
There is no player the Sixers could have selected in 1996 who would have brought them closer to a title than Iverson.
Center Marcus Camby, who was drafted second overall, never got the Toronto Raptors to the playoffs and is now with his third team.
Forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, picked third by Vancouver, never has been in the playoffs.
Point guard Stephon Marbury, despite playing in Minnesota with Kevin Garnett, New Jersey with Keith Van Horn and Kerry Kittles, Phoenix with Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion and New York with Allan Houston and Kurt Thomas, has played in just 18 playoff games.
Guard Ray Allen, who played in Milwaukee with Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell, only played in 26 playoff games before being traded to Seattle.
Iverson has led the Sixers to 57 playoff games and took them to the 2001 NBA Finals.
If you want to say that Kobe Bryant is the most successful alumnus of the '96 draft, you can, but I'll point out that Bryant won his three titles riding shotgun to O'Neal, and as soon as Batman took his act to South Florida, Robin and the Lakers immediately went into the lottery.
Despite last night's 104-83 loss to the New Jersey Nets, the Sixers (41-39) can clinch their sixth playoff appearance of the Iverson era if they beat the Milwaukee Bucks tonight or the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday at the Wachovia Center.
The Sixers also will make the playoffs if Cleveland loses one of its final two games.
By comparison, Iverson has had infinitely more playoff success than his All-Star contemporaries such as Garnett, Vince Carter, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Jermaine O'Neal, Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker.
So while it may be probable that the Sixers never will win a championship with Iverson, it is also probable they have had more success with him than they ever would have without him.Comment

I'm giving props to my favorite player for his career season and you all can kiss my ***., how can you love someone that doesn't even know who you are that much!?! Allen without a doubt has already established himself as an all time great on the court (my opinion) but that doesn't mean you have to latch on to the guy's nutz!

Re: Article on A.I.
I dont personally think this article is for "nut huggers" p2k, I think you may be a little bitter and mad the sixers havent done anything significant since 2001. (as a warriors fan i feel your pain)
I think the article present valid facts on why that occured, Iverson has done more in his career then almost evryone that was drafted before him or in the same draft as him, minus Kobe.
Ive seen your thoughts on the mans game before i know where you stand, but im saying, is it TRULY his fault because hes playing in an era where big men dominant. Shaq, Duncan, do you REALLY think that "any other star player" would have more success?
I personally dont not really, maybe make it to the ECF with a few finals apperance then end up like the NETS, second place 3 years in a row. or maybe you want that, hell i dunno
I mean damn, is it dominique wilkins, gary payton, karl malone, stockton, etc etc fault for nto winning a ring because they played in a era where the GOAT played, and won 6 ?
I watch alot of sixers games on NBA League Pass, I just think Philadelphia fans are just to hard on thier players, these fans are the same fans that will cheer your first basket as a sixer, then when you miss a few in a row will boo you, dont matter if your injured, and can barely play(Chris Webber)Last edited by GSW; 04-20-2005, 10:12 AM.#SimnationComment

I didn't mean it in that way. I said what I said because it's an Iverson "feel good" story and I'm sure it made the Iverson butt squeezers feel proud. Good for themComment
