New attendance mark surpasses 1995-96 total

NEW YORK -- NBA regular-season attendance averaged 17,314 this year, the highest in league history.

Total attendance of nearly 21.3 million topped the previous mark of more than 20.5 million set during the 1995-96 season, the league said Thursday. Excluding the addition of the expansion Charlotte Bobcats, NBA games still drew more than 432,500 fans this season than last season.

This year's average attendance mark exceeded the 1995-96 record of 17,252 and last season's average of 17,050.

Detroit had the highest attendance (22,076), followed by Chicago (20,204) and Dallas (20,061). Charlotte (14,431) was next to last among the 30 teams, and New Orleans (14,221) had the lowest mark.

Thats great to hear. I'm glad that people are going back to watching games. I think what it is is that some teams are finally getting good again. This in turn brings people back to watch. Case in point, the Chicago Bulls. I dunno what their attendance was before, but I'm sure it's a lot better now. Other teams like the Wizards, Warriors, Celtics, Heat, Suns, Sonics, etc. are also bringing in crowds again. This combined with teams that already had a high attendence (Lakers, Kings, etc) makes for an improved fan attendence base. Good stuff to see.

Kinda strange for me tho, I didn't attend any game this year. Each year prior to this tho, I had gone to at least 10 games each season. Weird.

Definitely good news. It was great to see a lot of recently bad or mediocre teams achieve success this year. Here's hoping they don't wreck everything with the CBA expiring at the end of June...
