    THE PUNCH...

I was jus wondering if any older fans remember THE PUNCH? The Oct. 21, 2002 Sports Illustrated had a story on this and it's amazing what happened, I couldn't even imagine. It was on Dec 9, 1977 when the Lakers hosted the Rockets. "Kermit" Washington punched (underrated word really) Rudy Tomjanovich...the doctors compared the punch to going through a windsheild of a car traveling 50MPH. I was jus seein if anybody remembered this because this was 9 years before i was born.

    Re: THE PUNCH...

There was an article in SLAM Magazine about it. The guy was protecting himself,in his words, he said that his back was turned and when Rudy T came behind him he thought he was attacking him so he swung and cracked his face open. Rudy T never spoke to Kermit again and Kermit has apologized he feels that he shouldn't be judged by something that happened in a seconds time. It was different from that guy who hit that ref and knocked him for a bad call. He just hit the guy Kermit was in the middle of a fight already and swung out of fear. He felt sorry for what happened.

I remember it, but remember that back in 1977 there was no ESPN and coverage of the NBA was limited. So I just saw pictures of it. Their really wasn't a lot of coverage.

They did try to make a villain out of Kermit Washington and I don't agree with what he did, I could see that he was involved in a fight and just reacted.

I saw a peice about this on HBO I think.

Rudy is still pissed of about it and said it was a p#ssy move. He hasn't forgiven him.

I could've sworn that I heard him say that. Hey if you know for sure then I believe you.

Yah I have seen the SI story and the HBO story in the past. The biggest thing that bothers him is that people keep bringing it up and he realizes the same thing happens to Kermit Washington. They are linked by this thing.

Washington seems to be a decent guy who let himself get out of control in this case, he has apologized but never completely, he always points out that he didn't start the fight and that Rudy was running at him.

I have never heard anything Rudy say anything like you said he said.
