Double-double, triple-double...does it really mean that much?

Seriously, is it really more impressive if a guy has 20 pts, 10 rebs and 10 assts verses having 20 pts, 9 rebs and 11 assists? I mean the latter does not qualify as a "triple double". It seems like a novelty in that its appeal is being able to say, "triple double" instead of "double double". The same for 20 pts and 9 rebs vs. 10 pts and 10 rebs. In this case Id take the 20 pts even though you cant call it a "double double".

Does it mean much? Yes in some ways because it's an indicator of how well a player can shoot, pass and rebound the ball in that game. It's still a novelty stat tho and while it is rare to have a triple-double it isn't a TRUE indicator of a player unless he's Oscar Robertson reincarnated.

I'm pretty sure that the correct way to say that is "It don't mean no ****, homeboy!"

In todays game it is impressive b/c most of these guys only care about which celeb is in the stands, how good they looked on that dunk.

Triple -Double not easy to accomplish unless you're the main focal point of running a OFF, you have to have the ball in your hands a lot & create for yourself & teammates.

While on one hand it is impressive, it doesn't impress me much, unless it's done consistently.

I wonder if it still counts as a triple double if you get 10 points, 10 rebs and 10 turnovers.

turnovers don't count because it means they lost the ball, or possession, to the other team. which is also negative so it isn't part of the triple double numbers.

10blocks,10assists,10points,10rebounds,10steals. so what would that be? a quintuple double?

I think it does count as a triple double because turnovers are part of stats. It may not be the most positive aspect and it's not the kind you would brag about, but I believe it is. Jason Kidd when he was on the Suns had one a couple of years against the Knicks where he has double digit points, assists and turnovers and Sportscenter actually mentioned it during the highlights.

If its done with any type of consistency then its impressive because it shows versatility, but if its sproradically done by a player , its like hitting for the cycle, it sounds good, but doesn't guarantee a win, which is the most important thing.

Nah, they don't count. It is a measure of productive stats, not destructive.

Nash had a "tragic triple" this year, but nba.com only lists the one he legitimately picked up.

Yeah they definitely don't count. That's like saying in soccer that someone got a hat trick when they score 2 and then an own-goal.

OK, yeah, admittedly it means the guy has contributed in a variety of ways. But in comparison to a stat line where, say, a guy has 25 pts 12 rebs and 9 assists, a triple double means little. Is the 25/12/9 any less impressive than 10/10/10? Of course its not and in this regard its kind of bogus. Like I said, too, its the same for a 25/9 statline vs a 10/10 where a double double is concerned. And the reason I mention this is that a triple-double and a double-double is a stat that gets way too much emphasis by virtue of the fact that they track it. For example, you will hear an announcer say, "thats his 5th triple double of the year." But what about all the games where he went for 30, 12 and 9? Those too are games where he had a wellrounded statline but he gets no credit because he was one assist shy even though he was double figues +20 in pts and +2 in rebounds. It kind of makes a triple-double as a stat seem pointless.
