Re: The Perception of Being a Ballhog
Although some players get hot and will have a 17-25 game there are no players on average who take 25+ in a game where a good percentage are not bad shots and the team doesn't suffer for it. That's why Shaq is such a smart player and doesn't get enough credit in this regard. He's never led the league in scoring because he doesn't try to take every shot when the ball is fed to him. If the shot is not there he'll kick it back out where his teammates can get the open jumper easily instead of forcing it against a double team like so many of today's "superstars" like to do. This makes the team better and that's why his FG% is always high. Kobe doesn't see the game that way and that's what drove Shaq and Phil nuts. Unfortunately there are 10 Kobe's for every Shaq in the NBA with these type of instincts.Comment

most of the time he's close enough to dunk/lay-up/short little hook jumper, centers generally have a higher FG% just becuase of the nature of the position and the nature of the game and the type of shots they get
plus since the shots are always layups etc. you'd be hard pressed to find a "bad shot" since basically any time you are that close to the basket its a good shot...especially if you are 7 feet tall, 350 pounds
its only the guards that are labelled ball hogs, and i dont get why people put the onus of creating for other players so much onto the shoulders of these guards, if the teammates arent gonna work to get open then they dont deserve the ball, it shouldnt be kobe or tmacs fault or whoever that they ended up shooting a bad shot when their teammates aren't cutting or actively getting open or putting THEMSELVES in a good offensive position
that leads to more one on one bball and more turnovers becuase the defense doesnt have to work as hard and there is less ball movement, its like what someone said a lot of it is due to crappy coaching and ******** offensive sets or ********ly executed setsComment

With a center its the ability to recognize the double team or a open man or cutter for a even higher % shot that is what makes you a smart player or not a ball hog. Forcing a shot up with two players drapped on you even if you are 7'2 350 is never smart.Comment

Shaq isn't a bad passer. I've seen him make a number of nifty little passes from his post up position to guys cutting to the baseline. He doesn't do it as much though these days. And if Shaq could just get his fts up to 65% it wouldn't matter either way because when you put two guys on him as he gets into the paint, its going to be a foul 80% of the time.Top Five Favorite Bands
