Re: The 2016 New York Knicks: Now that we're done tanking...
Knicks would have liked to have brought the highly-respected Galloway back, but a multi-year deal would have eaten into 2017 cap space......It is absolutely crucial that NY retain at least $31 million in cap space for next summer, as that'll be starting salary of max contractsThat will be a theme you'll for next 11 months. FA class of 2017 is stacked. Knicks have a legit chance to pair KP w/ Westbrook in his primeOriginally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

I won't be getting to excited for the westbrook stuff. I mean we just got Rose and if he does well next year I am pretty sure they won't want to let him walk after signing his buddy Noah for 4 years

Re: The 2016 New York Knicks: Now that we're done tanking...
Derrick Rose makes 21 mil this year. I've seen that his cap hold next year will be 30.5 mil (I guess because of the percentage of the cap he signed for originally? Not sure how all of this works). So basically if he plays poorly he's not worth that money. If he plays well and wants a big contract he's probably too risky to max out. Is there any way D Rose comes back after this year? We'll have to renounce his cap hold to sign anyone, at that point, the playing field is open. Do we want D Rose for the max or Russ for the max? Or CP3 on a 3 year max? I don't know.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

It'll take a lot for me to be convinced that signing Rose to the max would be the best course of action. A LOT.[NYK|DAL|VT]

I see your point. Not sure if I want Rose for max money. I didnt know that Paul was a free agent next year. I just dont want us to go all out gutting the roster just to have westbrook spurn us and end up with the Lakers.

Re: The 2016 New York Knicks: Now that we're done tanking...
Definitely agree with Russ and the Lakers or even god forbid the Clippers. CP3 and Blake both have options to get out of their deals next year, I'd assume they would take them to get new ones even if they planned to re-sign with the Clips.
The Woj report in February about Russ liking Porzingis is bugging the **** out of me lol. I know Woj is reputable, but why would he know the stuff that he knows? We know he gets his stuff from the player agents. So if he says in a report, that Russ is a big fan of Porzingis, and that we should start constructing an elite coaching staff to lure him...is that Russ talking to Phil through his agent through Woj? Lol like this whole thing is so cryptic. Then we know he wants to be in a big market...check. He wants to be a huge star...check. He's big into fashion...check.
I don't know. All of our starters are locked up past this year other than D Rose. We're allegedly trying to open up space for a max spot next year. One of our assistant coaches was a player development coach in OKC. Just seems like it's not that far fetched. The part that throws it off for me is D Rose having recruited Noah, and us now having him long term. But if D Rose gets paid somewhere else, he won't care.
I also feel like CP3 has the kind of PG game that would do well in any offense and will age really well. So there's that option.Last edited by DieHardYankee26; 07-06-2016, 08:04 PM.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: The 2016 New York Knicks: Now that we're done tanking...
I read this post over on the RealGm board that had some interesting information.
Hey all!
Not sure how much you follow along the other boards, but I've been at Orlando Summer League all week. I had the chance to talk to a lot of people with the Knicks over the week and today got about 5 minutes with Phil Jackson and Steve Mills. Previously I talked to Jeff Hornacek and Kristaps Porzingis as well. Here are some of the notes I got from various people associated with the team. Not all of them are from the previously referenced guys.
Not all of this may be super newsworthy or anything, but all felt good enough to share.
If you have specific questions, please quote me so I'll be sure to see it.
1. Porzingis is ridiculously big in person up close. And he's all arms and legs. People are not meant to be built like he is.
2. He really wanted to play for Latvia in the Olympic qualifier and the team shut it down pretty quickly. So, he asked to play Summer League and they shut that down even quicker. But the team loves his desire to play and work. They have to make him leave the gym.
3. They see him as 100% the star of the franchise, beyond even Carmelo Anthony. As soon as this year, they hope to start to transition the team to being Porzingis' team.
4. Expect to see Rose and Jennings play together some. Hornacek had really good success with that in Phoenix with Dragic and Bledsoe and likes the options it provides. He's really excited to draw up sets that feature multiple dribble drives and Porzinigis diving to the rim. Hornacek had great success with Miles Plumlee as a diver/roler and see Porzingis as about 100x better.
5. The usage of the triangle is still something Phil wants. As often said, the triangle to him is bigger than just a basketball thing. But the understanding was that Hornacek would not be forced to use the triangle. Elements of it, but not solely it. He has stuff he likes and you can already see the roster being constructed that way.
6. They feel like they will be very hard to score on inside with Noah and Porzingis. And they intend to play Thomas a lot to further extend the defense.
7. A big part of signing Noah was his passing and ball handling ability. They see his ability execute DHOs and screens as a huge key to getting Rose free and getting Anthony shots.
8. It was very hard for them to give up Robin Lopez. They loved everything he did for them and his fit with Porzingis. But, as the quote was, "you have to give something to get something and we feel like Rose was someone we had to get."
9. They weren't so sad to see Jerian Grant go. I won't name the person who said it but they said, "That was Phil's pick. Dude loves big PGs and reached. And we realized by the end of Summer League last year."
10. The team is really excited for Hernangomez and Kuzminskas. They feel like both are athletic and tough and will pair well up front with Porzingis.
11. Courtney Lee was the SG they wanted all along. They said the Eric Gordon rumors were "bullsh*t. We already took a shot on one injured guy and Melo isn't always healthy either. Why would we add a walking injury to the mix?"
12. The team was bummed to lose Galloway. They loved the kid, but had to make some tough choices with the cap.
13. And finally, don't be surprised to see Ron Baker get a camp invite and to make the team as an undrafted rookie. He's been pretty good in Orlando and repeatedly I was told "he just plays the right way all the time. All the time. It doesn't translate here (Summer League) because this is bullsh*t basketball. But this guy can play. He'll be in the league."
Bonus: They openly admit they may have the worst Summer League team ever and that most of their guys have no shot at the NBA.
So, again, not really anything earth shattering maybe, but some stuff I heard that I wanted to share.ATLANTA BRAVES

Re: The 2016 New York Knicks: Now that we're done tanking...
1. Rose will want the max. And Rose will entertain all offers. But the Knicks have an instant advantage if they deem he's worth it.
2. The Knicks will have to convince Rose that he's wanted but both sides will perform their due diligence. This is risky but the Knicks won't settle on Rose early.
3. The period between commitments and official signings will work in Knicks favor. It will give them a chance to gauge interest and not lose Rose while scrambling for a replacement.
It's important that the Knicks don't break communication with Rose because there's still a very good chance the Knicks get spurned by Paul or Westbrook or whoever. Rose may be their best option, if he performs well in 2017.
If he plays well, it's not so bad if they lock up a 28 year old Rose. Bad knees, sure. The backend of the deal could be bad. But it's either that or the team is looking at guys like Rubio, Rondo in two years or waiting till Lillard is available in three? years.
It's 2017 or a whole lot of trouble."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: The 2016 New York Knicks: Now that we're done tanking...
One of the things they're banking on would be Porzingis improving, and that's not going to cost any money. If Porzingis is going to be as good as we all think, if everything flames out he'll be 24-25 when its over. Then you just start again.
Our contention is going to rest largely on if he can become the guy we expect him to be. The Latvian has the whole city on his shoulders. And stuff like that article posted earlier, I believe. Dude had to be told he couldn't play in the Olympics or the Summer League he was just so ready to play. He has to be told to leave the gym. He's the future.
Gotta be Knicks Bulls in Chicago on Christmas day right? It's going to be LIT.Last edited by DieHardYankee26; 07-07-2016, 07:27 AM.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Yeah, a bunch of us have shared this thought process for a bit now. Everything about this franchise revolves around Porzingis and his prime. Really didn't matter what was done this summer - we weren't (aren't) going to be a contender."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

There are some angles to this.
1. Rose will want the max. And Rose will entertain all offers. But the Knicks have an instant advantage if they deem he's worth it.
2. The Knicks will have to convince Rose that he's wanted but both sides will perform their due diligence. This is risky but the Knicks won't settle on Rose early.

We might be lucky to get one good year out of him but I don't want to play with fire. The last thing we need as KP inches towards his prime is a repeat of the Amare situation, esp with a PG who can't shoot.
Rose has made it clear in the past that he's about himself, his health and his contract - which I'm all for - but he's going to take the biggest offer out there and rightfully so. But we're definitely going to have to give him a max deal if we want him back on our roster in 2018.
