How do boxers put on so much weight before they get in the ring. A prefight weigh-in might be a couple of days before the actual bout. Anybody know how they're able to pile on the pounds before actually getting in the ring? Unless the ring weight that's listed is exaggerated, how are boxers able to put on 8-10+ lbs. days before the fight? Do they take water pills, etc. I've always been curious about this.

Takes a lot to make weight, a lot of sweating and work. At the weighin, most guys are dehydrated and exhausted. -

It's called weight cutting, and these guys all have it down to an exact science. All they are doing is sucking all of the water weight out of themselves (extreme dehydration) so they can make the weight for the fight. Immediately after the weigh in, they drink a ton of water and other fluids to rehydrate, and end up coming into the fight at their "walk around" weight.
Bigger guys do this all the time to gain an advantage. Instead of fighting in a higher weight class where they wouldn't have to cut at all, they cut the weight, and then rehydrate so at fight time they have a weight advantage over their opponent.Comment

There are a myriad of ways to do it, but working out in a plastic suit in the suana will typically get the job done. It depends on how much weight they are cutting.Originally posted by Vinceanity2k3And how do they do this? Do they go in sauna's for about 5 hours?
For instance Gatti cuts alot of weight and will probably be around 160 for his fight Saturday night, but the official weight for the fight is 140.Comment
