    Boxing becoming mainstream again?

After this weekend's fight, we finally saw a slight increase in boxing interest in the media. But what could be done to spring boxing back to the mainstream as it once was?

One definate way is to have a year like we are having now. This is by far the best and most active many of the top names have been in years. We've seen Judah, Floyd, Gatti, Hatton, Brock, Peter, heck even Brewster.
For a while money and hand picked bums taking on top names have ruined boxing, but now it seems we are getting good fighters taking on one another and the lower ranked guys are at least getting active on ESPN (Tuesday and Friday Night Fights).

Noteable matches in last 12 months.
    Wright vs Trinidad
    Tarver v Johnson I
    Tarver v Johnson II
    Hopkins v Eastman
    Maywether v Gatti
    Brewster v Golata
    Hatton v Tzu

Give us good matches on a regular basis.

    Re: Boxing becoming mainstream again?

Actually boxing may be seeing a slight increase in mainstream interest but the sport is still mired in mediocrity. The lower weight classes have always been pretty good for the most part. The bread and butter for the boxing industry is the heavyweight division which has been in a massive slump for about 10 yrs or so.

Until the heavyweight division gets some interest again boxing will always be a fringe sport from the perspective of the mainstream media. Boxing really needs a flashy superstar that can cross over to the mainstream world. We've seen a few good boxers out there lately but no one commands the kind of interest that Mike Tyson got in his heyday. It's pretty sad when the biggest mainstream star in the heavyweight division in the last decade is a washed up George Foreman.

The lower weight classes will ALWAYS survive and be relatively strong IMO. So this isn't something totally unexpected.

yes you have to have a superstar in the heavy weight division for it to be really mainstream like the tyson days, or even the evander days. Great fights, especially in the welter weights like Pacquiao, Moraless divisions. All across the board pretty much except for the heavyweight division.

Boxing won't be mainstream util CBS/NBC/ABC start showing fights regulary like they did in the 80's.. So many great fights every weekend.. Even on Cable boxing is pretty scarce.. Only one weekly boxing telecast.. FNF..

All those matches you listed were seen by only a few million ppl if that many.. & two were on PPV, so the numbers will be under a million..
