    Nikolai Valuev...

Just bored at work and I was looking at some boxing stuff. Stumbled upon a few stories about Nikolai Valuev (The Best of the East). He's a 31 year old Russian boxer who's size and record were the first things to jump out at me. He's 7'2 (or 6'11 depending on the site) and weighs 300 lbs. His record, 41-0 against mostly no-names (Clifford Etienne was his last fight).

Anyhow, he fought 2 times in the US at Atlantic City and destroyed both opponents. Was to fight in Las Vegas on 9/14/01, but due to 9/11 wasn't able to come into the country.

From what I read, it seems there are 2 theories about him. Either he's a freak with little skills who just boxes nobodies or he's a guy with talent/size that's trapped in Russia. Doesn't have much money to come overseas often and big name fighters over here have little interest in going overseas to fight him when they can fight a lesser opponent in the US and get paid more doing it.

Just wondering if some of the guys who really follow boxing have heard of him?

Here's some pictures of him against Etienne (guy is HUGE):

Never heard of this guy ever. I wouldnt consider myself a big boxing guy but I do follow it relatively close with upcomming fights and so forth. The guy is HUGE and looks like an interesting prospect if you can call him that with 41 fights under his belt. What is his KO #'s for the 41 fights? That would give you a glimpse of skill, vs lame-duck opponent.

Im suprised the likes of Arum and King in the world a guy like this hasnt come out of the Russian wood work. Reminds me of the Russin in Rocky IV who is a beast also...

      31 KO's in those 41 fights.

The story I read was that a few American promoters have approached him, but he's sticking with his Russian promoter. The reason being is that this Russian promoter brought him into his home when he had nothing and gave him a place to stay. So if true, he's doing the admirable thing (although probably financially bad) by sticking with that guy.

There were some stories on eastsideboxing.com about him:

Heres something interesting I found online...

Russian boxer Nikolai Valuev has reached the top of the WBA heavyweight rating.

Earlier, Valuev, Russia’s largest boxer at 151 kilograms and a height of 215 centimeters, occupied the third place in the list.

Valuev will thus fight the current WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz as the latter he defends his title.

Toney would have been a better opponent

          Fellas,
I follow the heavies closely and have kept my eye on Valuev for quite some time.

First, he is not a joke and this is not a publicity stunt or the second coming of Michael Grant. He can truly fight. He has heavy hands, yet has good hand speed for his size. In the fights I have seen (about 8 or so), he has taken some shots and appeared never to be stunned. He has great movement for his size and is a bulldog when an opportunity opens.

Do I think he can be a champ? Yes. There is no doubt in my mind that he would win a belt from Ruiz, Byrd, or Brewster. The reason I beleive this is because he has just enough boxing skills to accompany his size that is just truly overwhelming. I really can only see a super-heavy beating him. If he fought Vitali now, he would lose but he is continuing to get better.

Currently, he is banned from fighting in the US because he backed out of a fight. Also, he is staying loyal to his Russian promoter (as mentioned above) and refuses to join with the Russian mafia. These factors are really going to hurt him. However, if he continues to win all the doors will open up. The public WILL WANT to see a 7 foot monster with boxing skills. The dude steps over the top rope like a damn wrestler.

Here is a link for some of his highlights from his previous two fights. Just control F for Valuev and you will find the two links.
