Klitschko to fight Byrd for IBF heavyweight belt

Klitschko to fight Byrd for IBF heavyweight belt

HAMBURG, Germany -- Chris Byrd will defend his IBF heavyweight title in Germany against Wladimir Klitschko on April 22.

Marketing company Sportfive on Tuesday announced the fight, which will be staged in Mannheim.

Klitschko beat Byrd convincingly on points in April 2000 to win the WBO title, then lost the belt when he was knocked out by South Africa's Corrie Sanders.

"It's a great feeling to fight for the world championship again," Klitschko said in a statement. "I did beat him five years ago on points, but Byrd is stronger and more experienced today. His victories against top people like Evander Holyfield, Jameel McCline and David Tua speak for themselves."

Sportfive said Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente, would announce the fight at a news conference in New York on Wednesday.

Klitschko has a record of 45-3 with 40 knockouts., while Byrd is 39-2-1 with 20 knockouts.

            Winky blinks and inks!

            Winky blinks and inks!

Promoter Gary Shaw announced last night that he has been empowered by Winky Wright to consummate the previously negotiated contract between Wright, world middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, and HBO. "Jim Wilkes, Winky's attorney and representative, contacted me last night and authorized me to conclude the negotiations for Winky's title challenge, under the terms and conditions already agreed upon by Team Wright, Team Taylor and HBO," said Shaw. "Winky realizes how important this fight is to boxing and its fans and he is ready, willing and able to fight Jermain on June 17, per the contract. I will be forwarding the executed contract with Winky's signature to Lou DiBella and HBO for their signatures -- well before the WBC purse bid."

              Misc Boxing Info....

Here is some other good news..

Promoter Dino Duva has offered Samuel Peter to HBO for the opening televised bout on the April 22 Chris Byrd-Wladimir Klitschko showdown in Mannheim, Germany. Duva wants to put Peter in against "anyone brave enough to fight him," with the winner to fight the Byrd-Klitschko winner.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia says a clash between light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver and and former middleweight king Bernard Hopkins is near completion. DeGuardia told the Tampa Tribune "We've made extreme progress and we're hopeful we can make a deal as soon as possible." Hopkins will be moving to 175lbs for the fight.

                Paul Malignaggi W10 Donald Camarena

Rafael's remark: Malignaggi looked as good as he ever has, thoroughly dominating Camarena in a near-shutout, a surprise given that many perceived the "Friday Night Fights" main event to be a competitive match on paper. It was a satisfying victory for "The Magic Man," who had engaged in a heated war of words with Camarena during the pre-fight hype. But Malignaggi had by far the superior hand and foot speed and technique to win. How lopsided was it? After the fight, Lou DiBella, Malignaggi's promoter, told us Camarena came into Malignaggi's dressing room to offer his congratulations and said, "Hey, bro, you just embarrassed me on national TV." Just as important as the victory for Malignaggi was the fact that his constantly injured right hand came out of the fight fine, which is a major accomplishment. He broke it in his previous two fights, causing long layoffs. With so many other good, young rising contenders in the division, we'd love to see Malignaggi fight anyone from this list -- Mike Arnaoutis, Demetrius Hopkins, Juan Urango or Kendall Holt.
This Malignaggi kid has blazing speed. I wanna see him up against some major competition tho..

Barrage by Manfredo ends bout in third round

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The snow may have postponed Sunday's "East Coast Pride" show at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, but the storm didn't let up when the card finally got underway Monday night, as hometown super-middleweight hero Peter Manfredo Jr. was nearly flawless in stopping fellow New Englander Scott Pemberton in three one-sided rounds.

It was a stirring display of punching variety and power from "The Contender" star, who had logged only 10 knockouts in his previous 24 wins. As for Pemberton, 39, who has been known throughout his 11-year career for his resiliency and his memorable wars with Omar Sheika, it was obvious from the start of the bout that he had seen better days.

"What can I say?" Pemberton said. "Maybe I got old tonight. I didn't feel comfortable getting into the ring tonight. I felt very stiff and awkward, and I never got into any mode."

"The Pride of Providence" must have sensed it, too, and he fought accordingly.

"I wanted to take him out early," Manfredo said. "I felt extremely strong tonight."

From the opening bell, Manfredo showed little respect for Pemberton's punching power, standing right in front of the veteran as he picked him apart with quick 1-2s and a radar-like right hand that rarely missed the mark.

The second round held more of the same, with Manfredo standing in the pocket, beating Pemberton to the punch and deftly eluding most of the return fire.

Early in the third, Manfredo struck, hurting Pemberton with a left hook, and then after a bit of shoe-shining, dropping his foe with a beautiful right uppercut to the jaw. Manfredo immediately jumped on his former sparring partner, digging to the body and sending Pemberton down a second time with a right hand to the head. One final barrage was all it took then, with referee Richard Flaherty wisely calling the bout off at 2:06 of the third round.

With the win, Manfredo improves to 25-3 with 11 KOs; Pemberton, who was coming off a knockout loss to 168-pound king Jeff Lacy, falls to 29-5-1 with 24 KOs.

"The Contender's" Miguel Espino improved to 11-2-1 (4 KOs) in the co-feature with a six round unanimous decision over Dorian Beaupierre of Orlando, Fla., who after an 11-1 start is 1-4-2 in his past seven bouts.

In the opener, Mohammad Said finished strong en route to a four-round majority decision over "Contender" alum Jonathan Reid. The scores were 39-37 twice and 38-38 for Said, who improves to 18-4 with 10 KOs. Reid, who has lost three in a row, falls to 33-4 with 19 KOs.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada took a big step up in competition against Cuba's Yanqui Diaz, but a first-round clash of heads rendered Diaz unable to continue due to a cut, and the bout was halted and ruled a no-decision.
I missed it..anyone saw the fight?

Margarito stops Gomez 74 seconds into fight

LAS VEGAS -- Antonio Margarito and Brian Viloria needed to make strong statements in their title defenses Saturday night in order to take their careers to the next level.

Margarito, the WBO welterweight title holder, did just that, taking only 74 seconds to knock out the usually durable Manuel Gomez, who rode a 12-fight unbeaten streak coming into the bout. Viloria, the WBC 108-pound title holder, showed his considerable promise by out-pointing former titlist Jose Antonio Aguirre over 12 tough rounds, but also proved that he is still in need of some seasoning before he takes on the best flyweights of the world.

Margarito, who improved to 33-4 (24 knockouts), knew he had to knock out his challenger in impressive fashion in order to prove that he's not just one of the best 147 pounders out there (if not THE best), but one of the best fighters, pound for pound, in the world and worthy of marquee matchups with the sport's elite boxers, such as Oscar De La Hoya or the winners of the upcoming Shane Mosley-Fernando Vargas and Floyd Mayweather-Zab Judah fights.

Bob Arum, who promoted the pay-per-view card and is co-promoting Mayweather-Judah, announced that he has reserved the 18,000-seat Thomas & Mack Center on July 29 for Margarito vs. the winner of the April 8 147-pound showdown.

Margarito said he hopes the undefeated Mayweather, who many consider to be the best boxer, pound for pound, on the planet, beats Judah.

"I would love to be the man to give Mayweather his first loss," the Tijuana native said after learning of Arum's summer plans.

Margarito obviously can't wait to move on to bigger things in boxing. He started fast tonight to the thrill of the 5,309 in attendance at Aladdin Theater of the Performing Arts, landing an assortment of punches despite eating a number of counter left hooks before catching Gomez with a big left uppercut along the ropes.

Margarito followed his uppercut with a big hook that staggered Gomez into the ropes, where the longtime WBO belt holder put the tough Texan on the canvas with a number of follow-up shots. Gomez looked finished enough, crumpled on his side, for referee Richard Steele to wave the contest off at 1:14 of the opening round.

Gomez, whose record dropped to 28-11-2 (20), popped up and bitterly complained of the stoppage, but didn't help his argument by stumbling into various cornermen before falling into the ropes again.

At the post-fight press conference, Margarito and Roger Mayweather, Floyd's uncle, head trainer and a former two-division champ himself, got into a friendly verbal exchange.

"The only way that a great fight should be made is if it makes great money," Mayweather said, questioning Margarito's marketability and the quality of his opponents. "This guy you beat tonight, I don't even know his name, I would have done that to him and I ain't even put on gloves in five years."

Margarito laughed the comment off and then fired this shot at Mayweather:

"If Floyd and I fight, I will do the same thing to him that Julio Cesar Chavez did to you."

                          Mosley over Vargas

Mosley's future looks brighter after win

LAS VEGAS -- One of the first right hands that Sugar Shane Mosley landed in the first round raised swelling on Fernando Vargas' left eye.

By the 10th round, the eye was closed and grotesquely swollen, and referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight.

For Mosley, it was a dominant TKO victory in the junior middleweight showdown between the Southern California superstars on Saturday night at Mandalay Bay, and a new lease on his ring life.

Mosley, 34, a former lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight champ, had been on the slide the past few years, as was Vargas. But, now, with his first meaningful victory since winning a rematch against Oscar De La Hoya in 2003, Mosley has extended his shelf life as a marquee fighter.

"In the first round, I hit him in the eye with a right hand," Mosley said. "As the rounds went on, [the swelling] got bigger and bigger, and I was like, 'Wow.' I was looking over at [promotional partners] Bernard [Hopkins] and Oscar and they were yelling, 'The eye! The eye!' That fight shows that I am very strong. It was a great fight."

Vargas' future, however, is about as murky as his vision. Although he is only 28, it's an old 28. The former two-time junior middleweight champ has lost his three biggest fights by knockout to Mosley, De La Hoya (11th round) and Felix Trinidad (12th round), coincidentally all in the Mandalay Bay ring.

He has also had a serious back problem, sat out for nine months on a steroids suspension and struggled with his weight.

By the eighth round Vargas' left eye was severely swollen and virtually closed. Mosley, meanwhile, continued throwing fast combinations and targeting the eye with his right hand as the swelling got worse and worse.

Between rounds, Vargas' eye was closely examined and it appeared completely shut. But the fight was allowed to continue.

In the ninth, Mosley (42-4, 36 KOs) continued to torture Vargas' eye; Vargas simply could not see the shots coming. Still, the fight was allowed to continue.

But between rounds, Cortez, ringside physician David Watson and Nevada commission executive director Marc Ratner huddled to talk about the condition of Vargas' eye. The outcome: If Vargas couldn't avoid the continual right-hand assault, they had to stop the fight.

Mosley, who earned $3 million plus a percentage of the pay-per-view profits, continued to rain shots in the 10th -- mainly right hands -- and Cortez finally stopped the fight at 1:22.

HBO will replay the bout next Saturday (10 p.m. ET) along with the live Miguel Cotto-Gianluca Branco junior welterweight title fight.

Mosley led on two scorecards at the time of the stoppage, but incredibly was behind 86-85 on judge Patricia Jarman's card.

Vargas (26-3), who earned $4 million plus a percentage of the pay-per-view profits, will be $100,000 lighter in the wallet after betting Mosley $100,000 to whomever could score a knockout.

Vargas certainly seemed to agree with Jarman's scoring of the fight.

"It was a head butt in the second or third round that caused the swelling," he said. "It started to become a problem in the seventh round. I was wondering why they stopped the fight because I was putting pressure on him and backing him into the ropes. I kept wondering why they stopped the fight."

Although Vargas did not comment on his future beyond the obligatory "I'll take a break and then talk things over with my family," Mosley should find himself in another major fight soon. He wants the pound-for-pound king, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is scheduled to face Zab Judah on April 8 in a welterweight fight.

"Mayweather is the No. 1 guy," Mosley said of his desired fight.

Mosley came out fast in the first round and peppered Vargas with flurries to start the swelling. Vargas resorted to two low blows and was warned, but Mosley shook it off and landed some crisp right hands.

Mosley continued to fight at a fast pace in the second round, placing hard body shots and right hands. He was clearly the quicker fighter as Vargas was throwing one punch at a time.

Vargas, whose right eye also began to swell, continued to throw low blows in the third before being sternly warned by Cortez. By the end of the round, Mosley and Vargas were brawling at close quarters and the crowd was going wild.

The pace slowed a bit in the fifth, which gave Vargas a chance to land shots as he had his best round. But Mosley came back in the sixth and continued to display much faster hands than Vargas. As the round was winding down, Mosley hammered Vargas with flurries in the corner and the eye was getting worse.

                                Mayorga, Oscar in scuffle!

If Oscar De La Hoya thinks he has a bad relationship with Fernando Vargas, wait until he spends a few days with Ricardo Mayorga. On Monday, a scuffle broke out between "The Golden Boy" and "El Matador" on the set of a televsion commercial shoot in a downtown Los Angeles warehouse. Both fighters exchanged negative comments between takes while being asked to repeatedly walk towards each other and particpate in a stare down. Eventually the trash-talking escalated to the point where shoving began and both boxers had to be restrained. It will be interesting to see what transpires on this week's media tour to kick off the promotion for their May 6 showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and on HBO Pay-Per-View. The tour will start on Tuesday in Los Angeles, make two stops in Houston and Chicago on Wednesday, and conclude on Thursday in New York.
