Basically what I want to know is if he's a sideshow or somehow a legit contender despite that huge target zone given his size.

Anyone know about the "Beast from the East"
Apparently there is a 7'2" 340 lb boxer from Russia that is fighting John Ruiz for a "championship" (in quotes since how great is it really when Ruiz is champ) belt this weekend. Curious about him, anyone know anything?

Re: Anyone know about the "Beast from the East"
Originally posted by thelwig14I have been following his career for quite some time. He is not a sideshow freak. He actually has skill. His biggest weakness is probably his defense. He has an awesome chin but has a tendency to eat way too many shots. He is a plodder, but in the sense that he is so huge. I think it will be hard for Ruiz to beat him in Germany (where decisions tend to vary). One thing about Valuev is that he continues to get better and better every fight. Based on his current skill, I think he would or could beat every heavyweight except Wlad. I am very curious to see if he can keep Ruiz off of him with his jab. If he can, Ruiz is screwed. Should be a good fight to follow (via internet).Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

And the sad thing is, that this is MARKETABLE!!!!!!!! They have talked about Valuev on PTI, Around the Horn, and other shows and radio stations. If you are not a super duper hispanic boxer, only heavyweights can really bring out the interest of the common folk and from what I have heard and from experience, people are curious as hell to see what a 7 footer can do in the ring. He is undefeated and if he can somehow win this fight, he could bring back the heavyweight division until he gets exposed (which I don't think will happen) or beat soundly.Comment

For the record, he just won by majority decision. This is absolutely huge for boxing. After Toney beats Rahman and Wlad beat Byrd, things are really starting to shape up with King only controlling Brewster.Comment

I'll leave this open to discuss the Ruiz/Valuev fight though.
Sounds like Ruiz tried to punch and grab like he always does. Valuev drilled him in the late rounds and wobbled Ruiz, but Ruiz clinched his way to the bell. Crowd booed the decision, but from what I read, Valuev deserved to win this one.Comment

Interesting. I've never heard of this Russian until now. Dude is huge. Calling Wladimir Klitschko. What a battle that could be!MLB: Cincinnati Reds
NFL: Cincinnati Bengals
NCAA Hoops: Xavier Musketeers
NCAA Football: Miami Hurricanes
NHL: Calgary Flames

This guy is actually pretty darn impressive from what I've read. Of course, the Heavyweight division isn't what it used to be, but I wouldn't call boxing horrible because of it. There are some VERY good Middleweight, Welterweight and Lightweight matches.Comment

Originally posted by EWRMETSI know there isn't no super heavyweight division but there should be. Watching Lennox Lewis fight was a good way to fall asleep. All these big guys can do is clutch and hold.
If watching Lennox put you to sleep, you should not watch any boxing over 200 pounds. Lennox was as graceful as heavyweights come and he rarely clinched. All he ever did was dominate.Comment

Re: Anyone know about the "Beast from the East"
Originally posted by EWRMETSEvander, Riddick Bowe. Mike Tyson were all over 200 pounds and all much more exciting than watching Lennox Lewis fight some big stiff like Michael Grant. Heavyweight boxing has no compelling figures anymore, just a bunch of losers. I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything but heavyweight boxing has fallen off so bad that a Tyson or Holyfield mach right now would probably outdraw anything they could put on.
Exciting is subjective and Lennox beat all three in and out of the ring. Michael Grant was undefeated and one of the many that Lennox disposed of. Tyson or Holyfield cannot draw anymore because they cannot perform. Tyson has had back to back embarassments (not counting Lennox) and will only have a chance to draw if he matches up with Tarver (someone who has a fighting chance to beat). Wlad-Peter was the highest ratings HBO had this year. The talent is there, but unfortunately the politics, greed, and abc belts are there as well. Boxing will never be fixed until Congress steps in. Because no matter how good the 140 pounders or middleweights are, the general public will never care until there is something to root for in the heavyweight division. Hell, look at all the coverage Ruiz-Valuev is getting. People are interested in a 7 foot undefeated monster.Comment
