    Memphis and Boxing

I'm from Memphis, Tn. born and raised. When did Memphis become such a hotbed for boxing. I'm aware of the Tyson fight and the former Mayor Herenton was a pugilist in his day. Memphis, has been getting a lot of fights lately big fights(HBO/PPV) and small fights (ESPN). I'm aware of gambling has been legalized in Miss. which is a stones throw away from Memphis, and that could me the primary factor. Can someone explain the phenonmenon.

gambling and a overall decrease in popularity of boxing. Mayor Herenton wants to get in the ring with someone, or so he claims.

The Promotion company "Prize Fight" is located in Memphis. When no one would sanction Tyson for his match with Lewis, Memphis and the Casinos stepped up for the fight. Since then, Prize Fight has tried to bring one boxing match per year to Beale Street. I wouldn't call it a hotbed, just a "new" place to have a fight that isn't LA or Vegas.
