LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Juan Manuel Marquez will defend his WBC super featherweight title against Manny Pacquiao on March 15, Golden Boy Promotions announced Thursday.
The fight that fans have been clamoring for will take place at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on March 15.
Considered two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, Marquez and Pacquiao already have staged one legendary slugfest, with that ending in a draw on May 8, 2004.
In that match, the lightning-quick Pacquiao blitzed Marquez, knocking him down three times in the first round. But the gritty Mexican was able to pick himself off the canvas and battle his way back into the fight.
Since that memorable bout, Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KOs) has emerged as a superstar, becoming a big name not just in his native Philippines, but throughout the sport.
Pacquiao has won seven of his last eight bouts, with the only loss during that span an exciting decision to Erik Morales. But he avenged that loss, twice stopping Morales in 2006.
Most recently, Pacquiao took care of Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera by winning a unanimous decision in October.
Despite his impressive resume, Pacquiao, who is soon expected to make his foray into the lightweight division, never has actually won a major world title in his weight class.
Considered an afterthought to Pacquiao in the division, Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) retained his WBC strap by capturing a unanimous decision from Rocky Juarez on November 3.
Marquez has won six of his last seven fights since his first encounter with Pacquiao.
