Victorious Boxers 2 (The US edition)

So I just ordered this from Amazon for $11.00.

I know it's not the Japanese version with the insanely deep career mode, but I don't care. I heard that the gameplay engine in the US version (Allstars - Japanese Version) is much better.
And I was really interested to read about the 'coaching' mode.
What does that all entail? If I read correctly you have to groom a fighter by setting up fights, diet and training to make them champ. You don't get to actually fight, but I don't care. I think this mode sounds really cool.

Also, I love the deep creation mode it has. I'm going to create some of the old 90's heavyweights and sim a big tourny.

I have the game, I think there are only 3 attributes Speed, Strength, and Stamina that can be adjusted. I played through about half of the story mode on hard. The game got extremely difficult.

Yeah, I read that some fighters are very tough to beat.

So what kind of training/diet can you adjust in the coaches mode?

      P.S. Thanks for the reply.

I think it might be just those 3 attributes. You may have been fleeced. I don't have my PS2 hooked up any more, but let me know if the game has some features I by-passed, I might check it out again.

Re: Victorious Boxers 2 (The US edition)

In many ways, this game changed the way I view the world. The great thing about this engine is that every fighter is so different, they each bring a unique style to every bout. The control mechanics are spot on. The collision detection is blended with the animation engine seamlessly. And, you gotta love when the mouthpiece flies out in the game. The story mode in this game is great in that the subtitles are in english and you can really start to understand the story behind the manga. If you want a challenge, play story mode on hard. you'll get the best fights out of the CPU A.I. However, you may lose some fights when you are just beginning by knockout if you are too aggressive. Some opponents are very tricky and can be good counter-punchers. This game is all about subtle left analog stick movement and the auto-block feature. You have to hold down (i believe) the L2 button prior to an opponent's punch approaching your body. If you hold it down in time and your boxer is not lunging into the punch or in the middle of a punch, your boxer will automatically block / parry the opponent's punch. you can't be too far away from the other boxer, you have to be at a specific distance. the auto-block is not bad but it's only used when you are really in trouble. and using it with slow battle helps. (pressing R1 + X for certain fighters)

The last bout in Story Mode with the difficulty set on hard is one of the greatest challenges in all of sports video games. A 12 round featherweight bout between Eiji Date and the undefeated champion Ricardo Martinez (68-0 i believe). You control Eiji Date. Date is a great champion in his own right, but does not have the stamina that Martinez has. Even just a well placed two punch combo from Martinez could knock Date down. The key to this fight is to use slow battle occasionally, lots of lateral motion around the ring. Make Martinez start chasing you, and you can start timing him coming in with the corkscrew overhand right from Date. (I believe R1 + triangle if i remember correctly when controlling Date) It took me 33 straight knockout losses in this match before I finally found a way to defeat the champion. Lateral motion and the occasional corkscrew punch to make Martinez a little tentative helps. It wasn't until the 8th round that i finally got Martinez in trouble. I landed a jab, corkscrew, jab combo and then he was wobbled. After a number of quick left, right, left, right combos Martinez finally went down and stayed down. 8th round knockout! What a feeling it was to defeat Martinez to capture the Featherweight title!

Anyway, this game is very balanced and is just an overall great way to learn the game mechanics.

However, once you learn the game and play through story mode and matchup between all the characters in exhibition / tournament, it can get a bit tedious since there is no create a character. so if you want a real challenge, import Hajime No Ippo 2 : Victorious Road, also for PS2. This game has a deep career mode with a deep create a boxer. (great random character generator in tournament mode too)

this game you have to manage diet and training regimens (very complex and take a long time to learn, and even longer to perfect) in one mode of the game called "boxer's road". so you control a boxer's entire career through a simple, yet open-ended interface. it's an incredible engine in that there endless possibilities of the matchups that you can create. the graphics are excellent, and there are so many venues from so many different countries. (some venues based on real places like vegas) it does take a long time to build up your character and get him as strong and as durable as you want, so it can be frustrating, especially as your boxer gets into his 30's. overall it is a great game because you can load your saved boxer into an exhibition match by loading a previously saved save file. big (like 64 MB) memory cards are necessary for this game, as you will want to save multiple versions of your boxer in case you screw up your diet, you can always go back. i stopped playing it because it simply consumed my life. i would meticulously go through creating fighters. i have a couple gems, but it also took valuable time away from my life. the best thing is to create a couple different boxers of various dimensions in different weight classes, and stick with one for a while and just try to build him up, win a national title, then go for world titles (like WBC, WBA, IBF, etc). it's a great game and i hope you can import it as you need to have a PS2 that can read japanese PS2 games. luckily, Hajime No Ippo 2 : Victorious Road only has some japanese text, as a lot of the menus are in english, so some of the menus and options will be familiar enough.

anyway, if you have any questions about any of the victorious boxer games that are not answered in this forum, or you merely are interested in hearing what other people have to say about any of the victorious boxers games, head over to www.dynamiteglove.com. sometimes, the forums over there might appear to be somewhat inactive, but a lot of people who play these games meticulously are always there (including me) to respond to any issues you might have with any of the games. just register and post your question if you want to.

although they have not released a game for the ps2 since the game you have (Victorious Boxers 2 : Fighting Spirit) in the U.S., they have released a game for the wii (that is only ok called Victorious Boxers revolution - no camera options) and also multiple games for the PSP, including a sequel to the Hajime No Ippo 2 : Victorious Road game called "Boxer's Road 2 : The Real", which made some key improvements to the first game that i referred to earlier, however in this game you can only train out of a japan gym as opposed to being able to choose between 5 different countries in the original PS2 game. i recently just picked up a PSP and imported the new Ippo Victorious Spirits PSP Portable game that came out last month. The programmers implemented a new blocking feature that is different than the one in Victorious Boxers 2 : Fighting Spirit for the PS2. In this game on the PSP, instead of holding just the left trigger to enable auto-block when at the right distance away from your opponent, with this, you can actually hold your block up by holding down both the left and right trigger. you can also move while holding up the block with the analog nub. this might seem small but blocking is a key part of boxing, and although they are only now releasing games for the PSP, it enhances the game engine in many ways...

in many ways, it is unfortunate that this blocking design was not reflected in the PS2 engines. still, i am more comfortable playing the ps2 games for some reason. It's fair to say that in some ways, the Hajime No Ippo 2 : Victorious Road is the deepest sports simulation of all time. the fact that it can be frustrating at times is only a result of such a robust design so that there are so many unique subtleties to each individual boxer that progresses through boxer's road that every fight is different because every time you train there could be a different result to your boxer's power, speed, and stamina. when you finally become a champion and see the results of your training in the ring, it becomes a mesmerizing experience...

              Thanks for the write-up PSU_DW2.

I know that the US version of VB2:Fighting Spirit doesn't have the deep career mode, but how deep is the coaching mode? Can you still control your fighters diet, training, schedule? Do you pick who he fights next?

              Thanks!

Don't the Victorious boxers games move fast? I played the first US VB but that and the videos I've seen on youtube of the sequels move a little to fast for me that's all that boxers not just the speedy ones. Was or is there a gameplay speed option/slider?

Does Hajime No Ippo 2 : Victorious Road have english in it or do you need a guide?

Victorious boxers is a great boxing game I remember I rented the first one my brother was beating me until the last round and I came back and knocked him out. I was just never able to find them in stores I may still get them if a get a 80GB PS3.

Haijo No Ippo 2 is mostly in Japanese but there is some english. But a site I've been to helps out. I really liked this game but it takes a lot of hours to get the most out of it.

VB: Allstars is a really fun game. It's not as fast as Hajimo No Ippo 2. The gameplay is stellar.

Re: Victorious Boxers 2 (The US edition)

Okay, I'm confused help me out. I went to youtube and saw this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1eoD1ZoyYE it's titled Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit. It this the US version? The move at the perfect speed no lightning fast footwork.

It's moving at the speed that I like is this really the US PS2 version that's around $10? Though I've seen other videos on youtube and they move superfast! I don't like that. I know the first VB US PS2 moved at regular speed but it had lock on/missed punches problems but it was still was great game.

Hajime no Ippo 2: Victorious Road is the JPN import but from what I've seen it moves superfast, the characters move at lightning speed. Does the speed attributes factor on how fast they move?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to decide if I want a 60GB PS3 or not and this is one of the factors. I decided not to get a 360 just for the one game (Prizefighter) I want. If I get a 60 GB PS3(I know where to get one) I can get VB2(US) and play my PS2 games on the PS3 and give my computer to a lady friend of mine. If VB2(US) does not move at regular spped I have a copy of Hajime no Ippo 2: Victorious Road but no PS2 but I can play it on a PCSX2 emulator if I use my PS3 funds and upgrade my computer.

Sorry for the long post but I'm confused and really want to play a great boxing game.

Yup, that's the US version. The Japanese version of this game is Victorious Boxers: All Stars.
I have this game at home and the gameplay is great. You can even do quick 'juke's to the left, right, back or forward. You have to time it right or you can get your *** knocked out. But the other night I won by KO using the dodge to the right. My opponent fired a lazy right hook, I juked to my right and fired a perfect right hand into the side of his face. He went down like a ton of bricks. The gameplay and physics in this game are great. You earn every one of your knockdowns and KO's. Counter-punching, bobbing and weaving and mixing up combo's will help you prevail.

No problem. Look for it at www.half.com. It's an ebay run site and you can usually find copies for around $10.00.

It will easily cure your boxing fix.
