FNF on ESPN returns this week

    January 9
At Primm, Nev. (ESPN2): "Friday Night Fights" season premier, Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Roger Gonzalez, 12 rounds, featherweights; Odlanier Solis vs. Kevin Burnett, 10 rounds, heavyweights; Erislandy Lara vs. TBA, 4 rounds, welterweights; Bernard Hopkins in studio

I want to see what Hopkins has planned for 2009 as well as see if Gamboa has improved any. Should be a good show.

Hopefully Hopkins has plans of retirement. No need for him to get back in the ring.

I really hope Gamboa has improved though. He is an exciting fighter to watch, but I'm tired of seeing him pound on nobodies. He really needs to take a step up, but with his lack of defense, it could be very dangerous for him.

Ugh. This is when I wish I had ESPN. TSN isn't carrying this card in Canada.

I really want to see the Yuriorkis Gamboa and Odlanier Solis bouts.

First fight was a first round KO.

Solis was out of shape but he won. Burnett took the fight on a weeks notice.

Gamboa in the ring now. He got caught and went down early in the 2nd. Good night for boxing.

Gamboa looked solid. His chin is suspect but he pretty much out boxed Gonzalez each round. Although, I don't agree with the stoppage in the 10th round.

I don't think Gamboa's chin is suspect, he has just has no defense, which allows fighters to hit him with flush shots.

TSN showed this card last night and it was a beauty. Gamboa sure is entertaining. Yes, he has to work on his defense, but I love his all-out style and willingness to mix it up.

Solis wasn't impressive to me at all. After watching him, Arreola, Tony, Valuev and Sam Peters last outings, no wonder the heavyweight division stinks and the Klitchsko's are dominant. All of the top 'contenders' are fat and out of shape while the KO brothers are cut and well conditioned.

Tony, Arreoloa and Solis could probably all be cruiserweights but decide not to because they're lazy and want to eat whatever they can get their hands on.

That fight between Solis and Burnett looked like a fight between two pie eating champions.
I honestly don't remember another time when the heavyweight division was filled with so many obese-looking top 20 fighters.

Any top fighter from the 90's would have rolled through all of these guys while smoking a pack of cigarettes in between rounds.

Gamboa is ligtning quick, but as he progresses getting hit flush is not a good idea. He is 27, he kinda is what he is. Unless there is some serious intervention (like Roach did for Pac) I do not see him getting far. He has the tools, and he is fast enough to punch and recover his guard before getting hit. If he learned to bend his knees and work the body, he could avoid alot of flush shots as well.

Head movement would work wonders for him.
