Mundine wins IBO Middleweight World Title

Mundine wins IBO Middleweight World Title

My boy Anthony Mundine got it done a matter of minutes ago against young Daniel Geale in one of the greatest fights ever staged here in Australia (if any of the diehard boxing fans are interested, WATCH this as it filters it's way online).

As most know Mundine is on Fight Night 4 and with tonight's win on his way to a likely fight with either Felix Sturm or Kelly Pavlik.

Anthony Mundine has won his third world title after claiming Daniel Geale's IBO middleweight crown in Brisbane on Wednesday night.

Mundine (36-3 record) looked like having an early night after knocking Geale down early in the second of the scheduled 12 rounds.

But Sydney-based Tasmanian Geale recovered to hold his own against "The Man" and go the distance, only to lose by a split decision.

It was the first loss in Geale's 22-fight professional career.

Interesting that he's fought basically at super middleweight all his career except the last two, where he's come in at middleweight. My opinion-he'd get handily beaten by Pavlik or Abraham.

Looking on Boxrec, it would seem that outside of a fight in germany he hasn't left Australia. As I'm not familer with Aussi boxing what kind of competition has he faced? I'm sure that "The Ghost" would be quite a step up. It also looks like he was handled by Kessler in 2005. But Boxrec also has him listed as the #4 Middileweight.

I have always respected you for loving your boy. I think Mundine is actually really underrated with 2 of his 3 losses coming against "super elite" fighters (and I had him beating Sven up until the KO).

If I was his agent, of the big 3, I would be all over Sturm. I think Sturm is great (he owned a prime Oscar...regardless of his excuses), but I think Sturm has regressed by fighting the Euro only circuit. Pavlik would be my next choice because Mundine could use his tools at 160 that he can't against hte elite at 68. Arthur? Run the other direction. It would be a rinse and repeat of the Kessler fight.

          Nice post.

Before I go on, I implore all to read up on the story of Anthony Mundine. This is a guy who left the NRL (for Amercians, say an elite WR in his prime leaving the NFL) for a career in boxing. He left mid way through the 2000 season and has never looked back.

The pedigree was good (father in the Australian HOF) and despite starting late as a professional, Mundine has put together one hellova career thus far.

Now, with that said, Mundine hasn't been guided all too well and has spent too much time here in Australia as pointed out. He has only fought three times outside of his home nation (New Zealand, Germany and Canada) and the quality of opponent on occasion has left many wondering. This is changing however thankfully.

Mundine's three losses have been in World Title fights (2 when chasing a title (Ottke, Kessler), one when defending a title). Mundine had Ottke until he caught a punch and was KO'd, Kessler was just superior albeit it was close and the Manny Siaca fight was a joke. Mundine was caught out taking a weaker opponent lightly and lost on points.

Good to see another of my favourite fighters, Billy Dib, sitting in the crown and cheering on Choc.

As posted, yeah, I think Sturm is the next choice and a good platform for bigger things. Mundine's strengths are his blinding hand speed and sometimes impregnable defense. I think he outbox Sturm in win in a decision. Whilst it's not heralded as much, Mundine's punching power has to be respected too, especially his lethal right cross behind the left jab.

Last six fights without a KO all on his home turf. Don't know if lethal is the right word.
The middleweight super fights will involve any combination of Pavlik, Paul Williams, or Abraham. Mundine versus Strum would be a nice appetizer though.
However earlier rumors of a Pavlik-Abraham bout that wouldn't even make PPV tells me the bigger money fight would be Pavlik-Williams.

              36 wins, 23 KO's.

Lethal is fitting. It's not devastating (a description for the KO KINGS of the game), though lethal all the same.

Yeah, to each their own. Wasn't trying to put down your countryman. Who knows how good he is?

                  Great fight.

I've been to half a dozen of Choc's fights and his speed is world class. The only time I've seen him outclassed was the Kessler fight, but he's improved a tonne since.

He hurt his eye and that has set him back a bit. He was superb when he destroyed Sammy Solliman (2nd fight)...but has been flat since. The fight on Wednesday showed he is back.

And likewise my post wasn't a smart *** retort from a fan

How good is he? We're about to find out. I don't think he can reach the next level until he beats some of the "name" fighters within reach now. Americans will take to him I feel.

Has built his in ring style a lot on Roy Jones Jnr (Snr has done a fair bit of work with him too) to a degree. No where near as good, though he may edge a little closer if he can string together some impressive wins over the next few years.

Side note: I was dissapointed the way Choc reacted after the Geale fight. I know he likes to talk it up, but it wasn't called for the other night...particularly as he was fighting another Indigenous boxer. He should have stood by Geale's side for the decision and he should have been a hell of a lot more humble, being the challenger who had just taken the other guy's belt narrowly.

I am a massive fan. I've met him a couple of times through footy (a friend of mine sponsors the Wests Tigers + used to sponsor the Kings, so I go to a few fucntions and he used to be at a few of them) and he's a hell of a nice guy.

I don't know what happens to him when he talks to the media...but he needs to get some PR guys. Khoder seems to not care if the whole country hates Anthony, which is a shame. The country should be talking about what he's achieved instead of most people hating him. It's a shame.

                          Very true.

Mundine acts the way he does as he knows it attracts attention. It's a gimmick. Mundine is horribly managed. If he was with a guy like Angelo Hyder for example, he would've been in the USA by now not to mention onside with the majority of Australia.

                          Sadly, this ain't the case.

Some controversy about a judge being intimidated by a Mundine supporter. LOL, apparently he could see the large score cards of the judges. The alleged intimidated judge scored the bout 114-113 Mundine.
