Legacy/training help for those having issues.

Ok, blanket disclaimer: I am a sim fighter. This is for those who are having a hard time learning or doing the training drills. I have found a few things that can help with the drills. If you have any complaints or want to exclaim "cheese" or "you need to work on your your sTiCk sKiLz", I humbly ask you don't clog up this thread as others may have more/better tips than I do. I thank you for this. If these do or don't help you, please feel free to leave any feedback as to what issue you are having. I will start at Open Sparring and work my way down. Remember that difficulty does matter in the drills.

    Open Sparring
The easiest way to get a Champion rating is to move the dif. to Amateur, then move the power and speed sliders to ten. High power settings allow for more knockdowns, which are a big points boost, and a high speed setting allows you to throw more punches per training session and allows you to score more points in the time allotted. Another thing that could help is to turn down the CPU offensive and defensive AI and the punch output to zero. These are the absolute easiest settings and if they are too easy feel fee to do what you want, as it is your game. On the settings above you can simply walk in and constantly throw punches racking up knockdowns. I don't use the above settings anymore, but when I first played the game it really helped. I wasn't paying attention one day (listening to my wife while playing) and at the end of the session I had racked up over 150,000 points. After that I upped my settings.

    Stay on your feet
Same as above, but drop speed to zero. Block, looking for counter opportunities and press when you stun them. You can get several KO's like that.

    Combo Drill
Set the speed to ten and the difficulty to amateur. I still have a hard time with there, usually getting prospect/contender at best with an occasional champion rating. The imprecise nature of the stick is tricky at times. With speed high you get to throw more punches.

    Heavy bag push
Amateur difficulty keeps the red line in one spot longer. Power moves the bag more and speed allows you to throw more punches. Try not to get more than one punch ahead so that when the line moves the bag doesn't fall back too far.

    Double end bag
Amateur difficulty and speed to ten. You can get more punches in and you move slightly faster around the bag. Be sure you don't move into the bag or it will slow you down. With high speed you can get two or three body uppercuts into the bag before the zone changes. If you see a 2X bonus, throw punches until it moves. I usually get a high contender or champion rating by throwing two body uppercuts and moving on towards the other side of the bag to catch the next zone early.

    Maize bag
Amateur difficulty and speed at ten. Higher speed allows you to move faster. I usually count in my head and after the pass on one I punch.

    Defensive practice
This isn't a drill, but just advice. Do this in Fight Now mode.

This is how I learned to counter and comes in handy for me before playing online. I create a boxer in my preferred class and max out hand and foot speed and power in both hands. He is my training partner, if you will. I set the difficulty to G.O.A.T. and make the power and referee sliders zero. I make everything else ten. I learned to block this way and on G.O.A.T., especially with ten on the AI sliders, the CPU is a master as body-head-body-head combos, which is what you see online.

Once I learned to block I started learning to time the punches and counter, which is really, really important when fighting online. After that I raised the power up to ten and toughness to zero juat to turn up the pressure and feel that at any time one punch could end the fight for them or me. It has really helped me to be careful with the CPU fighters, especially in the latter stages of Legacy Mode.

I hope all this helps. Enjoy the game!

A little advice for using the sticks if you're having trouble with it.

The tutorials, etc. show the jab/straight and body uppercuts at a 45-degree angle. I've found it works alot better if you go for more of a 60% angle, emphasizing up or down over left or right. Here's an example I posted in another thread.

My tips for some of the exercises, no CHEESE. I use my latest Champion sliders and can get Champion on every training exercise if I do it right and I'm using the correct fighter (for an explanation of what I mean, see My Sliders and explanation of Training methodology)

Heavy Bag Combos - know what punches you're good at, simple as that. If you're good at them, throw them in rapid succession as they come on the screen. If you're NOT good at them, look at your controller and make sure you do the correctly. Getting to, and staying at, 5-punch combos is key to this one. Practice not making any mistakes. Once you can do that, add some speed to your punches, because unfortunately you can't get consistent Champion ratings just by throwing every combo perfect (you won't get off enough punches).

Heavy Bag Push - Use the right straight when the red circle is up top to steady the bag. Use alternating right/left hooks to the body when the circle is low to move the bag. Throw all punches at moderate speed in a rhythmic fashion to avoid throwing punches after the ring has moved.

Double-End Bag - Don't stop moving and only throw uppercuts. Pretty simple and seems to work. I just flow around and around and throw uppercuts.

Maize Bag - Count. 1-2-1-2-1-2. Once you get in a rhythm it seems to get easy. Also, only throw left jab/straight to the body when you're in a crouch as it seems to be the safest punch. It isn't foolproof but it seems to work.

Thanks Parker! The 60% think really helps.

Training just about ruined legacy for me because it makes no sense to try to max points and risk getting less than auto training. Gets me angry when I try to play one of the training games with the awful ps3 stick and wind up getting a single point and I could have instead auto trained and gotten 3.

Cheese or no cheese I don't see how parkers system is not any better than the first system if he only picks fighters for each game that can do well.

As far as legacy I have adopted a strategy that I hope will play out ok for me rather than just stop playing the game due to these mini games. I always take 2 months between fights in order to train twice. I auto train and do the same exercise both times. This equals out to the same as training once and getting max points and I dont have to bother with this garbage system. Not sure if I will get too old too fast to make a run for GOAt but so far so good I manage to keep about even with the other fighters around me.

Anyone completely frustrated by these games might want to give this system a try and see if it makes the game any more fun for you in legacy.

You may still not gain points fast enough to keep up with other fighters if you auto-train all the time.

As for my system, I play it realistic. A 120-lb fighter shouldn't expect to max out on the heavy bag all the time, that's not what he's good at.

Ya I hear you Parker, it may not work. I should have mentioned that its only a few of the exercises that bother me, so the others I do manually.

The bothersome thing is that it feels broken. You have to get Champ in order to make training manually worth it. If you get prospect , its the same as auto training! Do why risk getting Bum level?

I think they messed up and auto should have been the same as bum and not contender.

The only one I cant get champion on consistently is the combo dummy, the rest I get champion at least 50% of the time.

FYI, I don't think difficulty level has any effect on the training games at all...I've tried them all on Pro and Champion back-to-back-to-back just to test and there doesn't seem to be any difference in scores...

There isn't no change in difficulty, it more has to do with the sliders, the trick with changing them actually works very good.
