Abraham Gives Up Middleweight Title For Super Middleweight Tourney

Sketchy on the details but the tournament will include Abraham, Carl Frosh, Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor, and young bloods Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell. Win or lose each boxer will fight at least three times.

At least Taylor was finally able to get a fight!

Interesting that Froch will defend his 168 LB WBC Title against Dirrell
in the opening fight of the tourney. A championship fight within a tournament. Each boxer fights three times getting 2 points for a victory and 1 bonus point for a KO or TKO. After three bouts the 4 boxers with the highest point total advance to the semi final round, meaning that to win this tournament or to come in second you will have to fight 5 times in roughly a year and a half.

Talk about confidence-the upset over Taylor was not easy.

This tournament is going to be fantastic. Andre Ward is from my neck of the woods so I'll be pulling for him to come out on top in this one.

Its a good way for them to bring some attention to the division. Now the downside is that after its over, who does the winner fight? There really wont be much else to do.

Damn your right. they should've just made a bracket style straight up tournament instead of this multi-fight league style set up they created.

What if the winner of the tourney is KOed in his first fight? A lot can happen considering that 4 out of 6 survivors make it to the semifinal round. Also the Ring Rankings provide some worthy "other opponents" and by than (Spring 2011) Pavlik will probably be there. These ratings are as of July 1st before King Arthur moved up.

I'm hearing the total money payout will be $50 million. The tournament will have 12 fights total.

The finals will be in the USA and there is a chance it will be on regular TV with an estimated 120 million viewers.

When I first dipped into the thread I thought it was K-1 style or old ufc where they all fought multiple times in a night. Now I'm seeing that this isn't really a tournament. It's essentially advanced scheduling - which isn't bad at all. People want the best to fight each other, and they're accomplishing that.

I want Kessler to STOMP Abraham.

but yeah, something that spans 1.5 years is hardly a 'tournament'.

We need boxing back on network TV. If that really happens, it could be HUGE.
