    Great Boxing Documentary on HBO

Just watched "ASSAULT IN THE RING" about a fight in 1983 in which Luis Resto, trained by Panama Lewis, used illegally plastered hands and gloves with the padding taken out to destroy a young undefeated fighter, ruining both their lives. Riveting. Check it out.

i watched it. ..good stuff but very sad. it shows the very disgusting underbelly of the sport of boxing.

i remember the pryor/arguello fight where panama lewis referred to the bottle he mixed during the fight. that dude is crooked.

What's sad is that Resto and Lewis didn't "ruin" Billy Collins' life - they TOOK it. And in the process ruined the lives of everyone around him. I still wonder if Resto was innocent and honestly had no idea, but I don't for one minute buy Lewis' story. He's as crooked as they come.

The only reason I kept HBO was for the boxing and now I'm kicking myself because I canceled it.

he admits to his family that he knew what was going on, but he didnt know the end result would be the death of his opponent.

Re: Great Boxing Documentary on HBO

I watched this documentary this morning and it was well directed, emotional, and showcased what I think is one of the most corrupt actions in all of sports. It was good that Luis Resto found some sort of redemption and inner tranquility by coming clean and seeking forgiveness from all of those he affected. I found his former trainer Panama Lewis to be a scumbag that could careless about his scandalous actions as a trainer in the early 1980s. I also found the family to a bunch of ambulance chasers that sought to exploit their son's tragedy.

This was one of the better HBO sports documentaries I have seen. It is ranked up there with Battle for Tobacco Road, Michigan vs. Ohio State:the Rivalry, Perfect Upset: 1985 Villanova, and this other great one about the plight of African-American football players in the SEC during the Civil Right years of the 50s-60s.

He admitted he knew something was going on, but I don't think he ever out-and-out admitted that he knew the gloves were tampered with, did he? I haven't seen the documentary so I don't know for sure...

in the beginning he said he knew something was up but not sure what, but by the end of the doc he admitted to knowing about the glove tampering as well as having his hands wrapped with plaster.

Wow. I'm assuming Lewis maintained his innocence throughout?

he sure did, especially at the end when resto confronted him about it. he curled up like a snake in the grass and then offered to take resto with him to the top once boxing reinstated him.it was complete snake move.

Nice. I kinda feel sorry for Resto now. I guess I'm gonna have to watch it.

Its a great documentary, the part that hit me the hardest was when Resto goes to Collin's grave and says I'm sorry.

Yeah, Collins could have been truly great. The story is just so shocking and so tragic, it's hard to believe it really happened.

I saw this too. Didn't know it was so popular, I thought it was just me.

Panama Lewis was and still is a crook. If I was Resto, I'd remove myself completely from this guy.
