Boxing Games: Why aren't there more?
    Posted on March 12, 2009 at 10:46 AM.(14)

Fight Night Round 4 is coming later this year, which should be very exciting news for boxing fans the world over. Unfortunately, in a sport where exclusivity doesn't make sense, where is the competition?

That is a question that was recently posed to me and as I started to look, I began to draw a few conclusions of my own. Why aren't there more boxing games? Here are a two very good, practical, and very related reasons I could come up with:

1)The sport itself is in a severe downturn and has no marketable names. Since the interest in boxing overall has waned significantly across America, and since there isn't anyone worthy of marketing the game around (at least a current star) many companies probably balk at the ideal of making a boxing game with no real current interest in the sport.

2)Licensing the old names is costly. And if the lack of a modern set of stars wasn't enough, licensing former greats such as Tyson, Ali, Foreman, etc. is not a cheap task. Only the biggest of the big in the sports gaming universe (EA) has been willing to pony up the money for so many former greats. It also doesn't bode well for the sport that all of the most marketable names in boxing are either retired (Ali/Tyson), dead (Joe Louis, James Braddock) or fictional (Rocky Balboa).

So what can companies do to make a boxing game that is marketable, profitable and realistic enough to compete with Fight Night? Let's hear your thoughts!

Who knows the boxing industry is so big as far as the different fighters.. it shouldnt be a thing to make a another competing boxing game

What they can and should do is pick upthe pieces Ea left on the floor

    Think 2k basketball..

    -Realism
    -Presentation
    -Individualism
    -Customization
    -Attention to detail

And have a robust and varied physics system.. with realistic and life like body reactions/punch impact reactions

I need to see who Mike Wang is. 2K still has all the fighters under contract so a sequel could be well underway.

2K messed up by letting Venoms Games(Rocky series) make the Prizefighter. 2K should have use their in-house Developers, Visual Concepts!

Prizefighter had a nice Career Mode. But the Gameplay was not polished at all.

                This is Mike Wang.

GameSpot talks with 2K Sports' top gameplay designer about leaving EA Sports to work on NBA 2K11, plus what to expect from this year's hoops game.

In terms of boxing gaming, I don't think anyone can do it better than EA. This isn't Madden. You can do it differently, but not better. Biggest problem with boxing is all the potentially great boxers choose other sports that are less risky. The solution to the originally question lays within the sport of boxing itself. Boxing has always been a popular sports, but grow it like football and the games would come flying.

someone needs to strike a deal with the devs of the boxers road/victorious boxer series. that series is as deep as it gets.

it has just about everything you could ever ask for in a boxing sim; the career mode is unmatched, and has been since the days of the ps1.
easily the best boxing series ever created.

....give it a face lift and a couple of tweaks and bring it state side for a multi-console release.

I think that Natural Motion, the developers behind the Euphoria physics engine, should have gone this route with their initial efforts in sports gaming. This would have been a great display of this new technology, where "you don't see something over and over" in the animation dept.

From there they could have built more momentum and then explore larger more popular sports like football, but at first, what better case than boxing to utilize this new technology?
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

I agree! Take Two/2K should have teamed up with those creators instead of the Venom Games(Rocky series).

Victorious Boxers proved that gameplay, depth, options, and customization is better than known boxer's names.

They think there is no money in it. We have to prove them otherwise

Look guys, Im willing to bet the next game has some sort of gimmick. They made a big deal of getting rid of the Parries from Round 3 and look what they gave us, Something ten times worse.

Man. if the next game is gimmicky and not a true representation of boxing I'm going to bash it. I will have EA mad at me. I will have a weekly podcast to bash the game....umm, worst than now!
