I don't understand how to counter

Okay, I just don't understand how to counter in this game. I'll block a punch or slip and punch and then throw a punch in return but I don't get that counter "flash" happening. I swear sometimes I'll have my guard up and the cpu you will hit me and I get the screen flash, how is that a counter?

I also I think that I am landing a nice counter but it's the cpu that's getting the counter flash.

What am I doing wrong? What am I not understanding?

counter window is pretty quick. so maybe your not getting them in within that small window?

i bet as you spend more time with the game, you'll learn to recognize these situations apart from one another.

I couldn't write a detailed synopsis of the counter system yet but I can tell you this ; Countering from Blocks requires precise frame timing. There's a very small window of 1-5 frames after you block a punch that allows you to punish your enemy with a counter.

Your best bet is to make your opponent miss completely, that where to start.
Leaning, stepping out of range, side stepping and slipping(q-circle up> towards OR down>towards) are all useful ways to make them miss.

To keep it short, timing and anticipation are keys to countering.

Have you had any success in the past weeks?
Ignorance of evidence is evidence of ignorance...

countering in FNC is a mixed bag, I've only played the demo but I've experienced what you have...

the best way I've figured out how to counter off of the block is to hold it up for a bit and the second your opponent's punch hits your gloves immediately throw back a punch

countering off of head movement works the same as FNR4, lean out of the way and immediately throw a punch back, if you react fast enough you wil be rewarded with a counter

sometimes it's possible to counter each other at almost the same time and whoever lands first will get credit for the counter punch

As far as getting frozen when you have your guard up, it happens to me from time to time, not sure exactly what causes it but its frustrating. Most times it happens at the end of a combo for me, I guess the counter window freeze lasts longer sometimes and you can still get hit back thru your guard late. Maybe messing with the "counter window" sliders can fix this.

The freeze really hurts the game as you can "fish" for counters all fight long which are usually the most devastating punches you can land and there isn't any risk or counter for it. I think it's actually worse than the "perfect block" from FNR4 because at least you had to time your block right, in FNC all you have to do is hold your block up and react quick, which would be a perfect implementation of how a counter works except it magically freezes your opponent which is BS.
