    How to fight a runner?

I just had an OWC fight against a guy who just ran from me the whole fight and in 3 of the 10 rounds didnt throw more than 20 punches but wOn easily on the judges scorecard. I stunned him in almost every round and got two knockdown but I couldn't even catch him when he was stunned to finish him off. How do you effectively fight someone like this? Also he had max height and reach for lightweight.

Re: How to fight a runner?

I think we must have fought the same guy! I was undefeated before facing him (16-0) and he was 0-7 but had max height and reach for a lightweight. I knocked him down in the first round and stunned him multiple times through the fight but he literally ran the rest of the fight and swept every round other than the first round. No matter what I did I could not get inside on him. I weaved, slipped, blocked, double jabbed but it was all for nothing. And, just as you pointed out, other than spamming with the jab and backing up, he usually only threw about twenty punches a round and still won them. It was like the judges' scorecards were filled out before the fight began!

I think there is an error with the scoring system in this game. It seems that the judges are automatically going to give a round to a fighter who is running and move and throwing the jab intermittently rather than the fighter who is throwing the more effective shots. It makes for a frustrating experience!

I'm under the impression scoring is based all on punch percentage. I landed more punches than he threw some rounds but he would be 17/19 on punches just by jumping in jabbing the stomach and backing out.

when hes stunned, cut off the ring (going up or down on the left stick) while moving forward otherwise youll probably just end up never getting close enough.

once youre in tight, be patient. try throwing 3 punch combos rather than one swing after another. be sure to start with the jab since this can open up his guard leaving him open to a bigger punch. also try stepping to the side to see if you can get a clean shot

          Attack that body !!!!!!

Seriously, keep attacking that body and after a few rounds his speed will be cut in half and he will be moving in slow motion.

Honestly you must didn't play the champion mode. Because in that mode one of your opponents was a runner and they taught you how to deal with them. IMO that was the best part of champion mode.

It trained you how to deal with all kind of fighters - runners, counter punchers, brawlers, body punchers, etc.

Interesting. I fought as Pavlik against Tommy Hearns and my usually sound body attack was thwarted by a guy who seemed to be able to perfect block about anything including body punches-he was countering me to death. I changed my strategy and started throwing a jab to the head, pausing a fraction of a second to release a power modified right cross. The strategy worked as I ended up with 3 knockdowns, the last one in the 8th round. In the last two rounds I stunned Hearns 3 times in EACH (9th & 10th) round and LOST both rounds.

I couldn't catch him but what pi$$ed me off more than anything was "not so great chin" Hearns not going down after being knocked down three times previously and hurt six more times.

I lost 92-94 on all three cards.

This was the fantastic part of Champion mode. The Frost fight almost had me wanting to throw my controller through the television...until I stopped and actually learned how to fight a superhuman fighter. Once you start using strategy he is actually a pretty easy fight. That single fight made me a much better OWC fighter.

To the OP. If you are a patient man, play his game. Cut off the ring, and "catch" him and bang away. "Score" in the judges eyes, then lay back and make him come to you. Just be sure that when he does you "win" the exchanges, otherwise if he feels that he did he will get back on his bicycle. The beauty of this is that you will know at the end of round 3 (When Teddy's score card come up.)if this is working or not. If it is keep it up. If not change up and go on the attack.

                    1. body shots

                    2. learn how to take the proper angle and cut off the ring

don't play OWC, it has been ruined in this years fight night by people like this. I stick to playing ranked matches, gym matches or matches with sim friends.

I actually have been really enjoying OWC despite all of the complaints people have. Outside of that one fight where the guy ran I haven't been too upset or frustrated.

Back to the runner, the first three rounds he threw about 60 punches standing and fighting me. I do remember him hitting my body more than usual, so I'm guessing he did it purposely to get me to trade punches early and slow me down so he could easily get away the rest of the fight. Is there any way to control my blocking? I knew what punches this guy was gonna throw, but my boxer never dropped his hands to block the jab to the body.

I just got my *** kicked my a runner who was clearly better than me at this game. I couldn't touch him. He was so much faster than me and the way he moved in and out I felt helpless. I couldn't touch his body to slow him down. Whenever he got in close he seemingly dodged and countered everything I did. The first fight I have ever felt completely helpless in. I'll admit I'm not very good at this game, but damn was that bad.

                              * Big Edit to my original post...

So! An outside fighter is not necessarily a runner as I originally posted. In fact a lot of good Outside Fighters are very aggressive - like yours truly - ( and I said good not great.. hA! )

Most of the "runners" I am seeing these days are the dreaded "Counter Punchers". Oh how I loathe the Skilled Counter Punchers... Now I can dig and respect the style but some of you clowns c'mon... Grow a pair. I have been in some fights where opponents have not initiated ONE punch. And I get it... your a counter puncher - that's your thing - but still... to not even attempt any sort of attack at all is just plain cowardly. I'm just saying.

So! I'm sure many others out there are frustrated with skilled Counter Punchers.

Here is a strategy I have employed a few times to whoop up on their cowardly asses...

It is quite simple and very effective.

I am an aggressive outside fighter that likes to initiate the attack - and this is a recipe for disaster when fighting a skilled counter puncher that likes to "run".

What I have found to be very effective with these types of boxers is...

                              1. Get right up in their grill and stay there

Don't come in swinging - come in with good solid defense but get right up in there - heck back them right into the corner if they want to run away. If your Jab is quick. Slide to the left or right and pop them ONCE. Sneak in a quick left hook... But get as close as you can. Go ahead and let them get their little counter punch in - Then step left or again and unleash a quick combo. Rinse and repeat and you will score. Of course they will get a few counters in but If done correctly you will outscore them more than often.

                              2. Go to the body from the outside

Faint to the head then slip into the body with a power punch - back away and slip in with a 3 punch combo to the head. Going to the body effectively slows down your counter punching opponent and will allow you to get in and out without a counter puncher landing.

                              3. Use your legs to close the distance and keep them cornered

It's hard for an opponent to slip out of the way and counter if has no where to go. Again keep your hands up blocking not punching and cut them off. Once your in close employ some of the tactics from step 1.

All in all - Counter Punchers that like to run HATE to smell you. Get them cornered. Get as close to them as you can with solid defense slide, step and hit some timely combos - Keep moving do your damage and get back out.

I know these tactics are not fool proof - and their are very skilled Counter Punchers just waiting to eat up the next opponents that tries this strategy - but this strategy can be very effective if used correctly.

How does my breath smell Mr. Counter Puncher? Oh I'm sorry am I making you feel uncomfortable standing so close? Do you feel a little claustrophobic now that you have backed your self into the corner? Slide step - Combo.

                              Good Luck.
