RJJ kept commenting on how different Alvaraz' punches sounded different from Hatton's. You knew they were heavy shots coming in. And he hurt Hatton several times throughout the fight (especially that left hook to the gut).
Hatton really had no response. The 4th round in particular was a bad one for the Brit. After that, it seemed that Hatton went into 'survive mode'. He didn't change his tactics at all and just appeared to be happy to finish the fight on his feet.
I can't wait to watch Alvarez again.
The one thing I hated though was that this was for the vacant WBC super-welterweight strap.
First, no-way these two should be fighting for a belt. They were both campaigning as welterweights prior to this fight and there are more established 154 guys so what gives?
Secondly, it was at a catch weight. There are already about 10 too many weight classes and yet we have to find catch-weights in-between these bogus divisions too?
I'm of the mind that if you have to fight at a catch-weight, no belt should be on the line.
But then greedy sanctioning bodies like the WBC wouldn't get that lucrative purse percentage they demand in every fight.
They know Alvarez has a chance to become a superstar so they want to hitch their 10% tithe to all of his fights.
Anyway, I hope Alvarez continues his steady rise to the top. I have to wonder though if he should remain at 147. He seems extremely strong and because he's not even 21 yet, you know he's going to continue to grow and take on weight. I just hope he can carry that power with him into 154 or even 160.
