    Saul Alvarez vs Matt Hatton

    Really nice fight.
RJJ kept commenting on how different Alvaraz' punches sounded different from Hatton's. You knew they were heavy shots coming in. And he hurt Hatton several times throughout the fight (especially that left hook to the gut).

Hatton really had no response. The 4th round in particular was a bad one for the Brit. After that, it seemed that Hatton went into 'survive mode'. He didn't change his tactics at all and just appeared to be happy to finish the fight on his feet.

I can't wait to watch Alvarez again.

The one thing I hated though was that this was for the vacant WBC super-welterweight strap.
First, no-way these two should be fighting for a belt. They were both campaigning as welterweights prior to this fight and there are more established 154 guys so what gives?
Secondly, it was at a catch weight. There are already about 10 too many weight classes and yet we have to find catch-weights in-between these bogus divisions too?
I'm of the mind that if you have to fight at a catch-weight, no belt should be on the line.
But then greedy sanctioning bodies like the WBC wouldn't get that lucrative purse percentage they demand in every fight.
They know Alvarez has a chance to become a superstar so they want to hitch their 10% tithe to all of his fights.

Anyway, I hope Alvarez continues his steady rise to the top. I have to wonder though if he should remain at 147. He seems extremely strong and because he's not even 21 yet, you know he's going to continue to grow and take on weight. I just hope he can carry that power with him into 154 or even 160.

Yea that was a good fight by Alvarez . Just crazy how hard he punches especially those body blows, but I give Hatton credit he lost but fought the whole fight. I also believe there was an issue with Alvarez weight anyway can't remember the whole conversation. but Alvarez is going to be good into he runs into someone who can handle his punches and can punch back.

I love the Cinnamon stick. I first saw him on the undercard of the Mosely/Mayweather fight. He fought Cotto's fat brother. Now he fought Hatton's drunken brother. The reason his punches sound different is because he's using those pillow gloves. He's heavy handed, but honetly Hatton should have been counting sheep. So either his power isn't what they say it is, or the pillow gloves make that much difference.

He looked good and he is my favorite fighter to watch but damn he has got to start moving his head. Hatton hit him with one or two shots that Canelo left himself wide open to that anyone with knockout power would have floored him. You can argue that he was fighting that way because he didnt respect Hatton but he has fallen into that habit lately in more and more of his fights.

Alvarez didnt make weight at the first weigh in and Hatton kept the fight despite his brother (who looks like he is enjoying the buffet line now that he has retired) trying to get him to back out.

Alvarez's power was also limited by his gloves. He will probably continue to wear those protective gloves for a couple more fights until he steps up to fight the big names and will need to rely on his power more. Right now his fights are picked to help him develop his technique so he doesnt need all his power yet.

          Great comments guys.
Yeah, it sounds like Alvarez came in a 1.25 lbs over the agreed limit.
I also think Hatton deserved praise for hanging in there. At the end of one of the rounds (8th maybe?), Alvarez had him pinned in a corner and was firing some heavy shots. Right before the bell, Hatton took the combo and returned a salvo of his own. It didn't appear to hurt Alvy much, but Hatton showed a lot of heart in doing that.

Fist, RJJ and others have commented at how this young kid has basically no defense and comes forward leading with his chin. I agree with what they said that before his career is over, he'll be in a few wars because he refuses to take a step backwards and only moves his head when checking out ring-card girls.

I imagine he'll stay at 154. He couldn't even make 150 so you would think he'd stay at the jr.middle division.

I don't know if he's ready yet, but I'd love to see him fight Cotto. Neither will have to look far to find the other. It could be an absolute war.

He'll be a MW for a while, but even then, he's got a thick frame, I think when he fills out, that weight may be a little difficult.

Right now they have handpicked his opponents with guys that couldn't hurt him. He'll be in trouble with anyone with a little speed & some power. He'll fight smaller guys for the time being, but if they get him in the ring with a guy who's walking around weight is near 165 or 170, then he'll be in trouble, unless it really is the pillow gloves that is killing his power.

It was a very good introduction to Alvarez for me. He looks like a good young fighter. Like they said in the telecast heavy hands. I said that almost at the same time they did. Keeping with the history of the great Mexican fighters he is gonna be an action guy.

Kellerman spoke about the joke that this was a title fight at any weight class. Didn't look good for Alvarez to be a 147 guy and not be able to make 150. But it is what it is.

Kellerman and Jones both spoke about something that "bothered" me about Alvarez. He has no real defense. I mean Hatton might as well have been hitting him with pillows for all the pop that he has in his hands, but he was catching Alavrez with shots that a more accomplished puncher could do damage with. If he continues to move up in weight he is going to have to address that deficiency. That said that is why he is going to be good for TV he will hit and be hit and as a boxing fan who wouldn't want to watch that. Hope to see him in the ring again soon.
