I'm usually the first to say that the PBF vs Pac fight is never going to happen, but could this be sort of a tune-up for PBF? That's not to discredit Ortiz as a legit contender or to say he fights anything like Pacquiao, but he is a southpaw volume puncher that has a powerful straight left. Maybe this is PBF testing the waters?

I'll believe it when I see it.

I'd be very surprised if PBF took this fight.

If he does, great for the sport.

Mayweather tune-up fight. This will be Mayweather picking his shots at will similar to the Gatti fight.Mayweather regains the WBC belt.

While Mayweather isn't fighting Pacquaio, I think that this fight along with the Pacquiao - Marquez fight (assuming Pacquaio finally can beat Marquez decisively) in the fall sets up the fight that we all have been waiting for, Mayweather-Pacquaio in the Spring of 2012. Big fights like this have to build and it seems like it's finally going to happen.

With that being said, this is a REAL fight. Ortiz is more suited for welterweight and he's young and hungry and just put away Berto who was young and hungry and undefeated. I think it's a tougher fight than expected and will be respected by the media (who will see this as a tuneup for the Pacquiao fight). I do think Mayweather will win though because when Mayweather does fight, he trains tirelessly and always puts in 100%. He's still "young" enough (due to him not taking much punishment in his career) at 34 to where he can still be close to where he was in his prime. And we've seen with defensive fighters like the Mayweathers and Hopkins of the world (that while their athleticism fades away, their superior skills reign supreme late into their careers). It's an interesting fight IMO because if Mayweather can't decisively put away Ortiz, who is GAME, this may be the start of his decline.

                Good points.
But I still see this as an easy win for PBF.
Like I stated in the Mosley-Pacquio thread, 99% of fights that are made are lopsided ones.
                There's a reason Mayweather's group picked Ortiz.
Since beating Berto he has name-quality, he's a true WW and he's a top ranked guy.
But his style is also tailer-made for Floyd. He'll come right at him while Floyd counter's him to death on route to a very easy and one-sided UD.

                There's a reason why Pac-Mayweather hasn't been made yet.
Usually when a fight can't be agreed upon, it's because the two fighters are evenly matched.
There simply aren't enough fighters today that want to face the best each time out.
Even Pac is falling into this category of late. He keeps taking safe fights until Mayweather finally signs.
I don't disagree with Pac's reasoning, but his next fight HAS to be someone truly dangerous.

                  Re: Mayweather-Ortiz Sept 16th

Ortiz beating Berto was not that big of a deal for anyone who seen a good amount of Berto and a lot of his fights. Outside of his speed, he was and still is a flawed fighter. He could have taken an L against Collazo who was picking him apart but just didn't have enough power like Ortiz had to convince the judges.

Ortiz was just the type of fighter to give him problems. Active, strong and aggressive. But Floyd would use all of that against him. Ortiz is tough but if he tried what he did against Berto with Floyd, he'd get knocked out. Floyd would drop him with one of those "check hooks" like he did with Hatton.

Only fighter with that type of straight forward, press the action style that could give Floyd serious problems is MP, everyone else, he'd pick em apart. Ortiz included.

I just hope that Pacquiao & Mayweather fight soon. I am sick of waiting. Of course, I will be rooting for Pac-Man. I can't stand Mayweather.

Our best chance at Pac-PBF is after this fight. Pac wants an October-November fight. They could get together early 2012 for the magafight.

I really don't want to see this fight happen, as much credit I give Ortiz for his performance against Berto, I still don't think he is polished enough for Floyd, I guess we can say that about pretty much anybody who isn't named Manny Pacquaio. I would just hate to see a fighter like Ortiz who has so much potential get out classed.

Why can't you stand him? Just curious.

A lot of people hate on Mayweather but I don't get it. To me he's one of the most anticipated fighters to see. A lot of people say Ortiz has a shot but Mayweather will prove that wrong. He's still too good.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.
