Re: Title Bout
if i remember correctly.... punch accuracy was too high on the version i played. to make up for it, i ignored the 3-round point accumulation window for stoppages. it made TKOs way too easy. does your version even have that chart? i think it was located somewhere near the bottom right-hand corner of the board. anyway, i LOVED that game. it was WAY more realistic than any boxing video game ever made! i also had another version, 1984 i think. but i had to get the '86 version when it came out because it had mike tyson haha!Comment

Re: Title Bout
I bought the PC version last year. It was a Beta copy at that point. I meant to buy the updated copy when it came out. Didnt follow up on it.
1) on the AH version, did you guys play with the add-on rules? The second copy I own has a one page set of rules for things like Fast/slow start. Control adjustments etc. That was brand new at the time.
So far as the three round TKO chart, I actually thought that was pretty realistic if used correctly.
I never did figure out the correct way to use the strategy cards. For instance When they said Punch Accuracy down 10, did they mean just for your fighter, or both fighters? I never did figure that out.
2) On the PC version by OOTBP, I only did a few fights. I liked the updated fighter rosters with 1000's of fighters. But I didnt play enough to get a real feel for it's accuracy. I kinda felt like I was watching a Whatifsports simulation.
I also never figured out how to recreate the history of boxing universe I wanted. I always (in both games) wanted to start with the boxers from the earliest possible years and play up to today. I still think it could be done in AH's Title Bout, but the sheer numbers involved with the PC version makes it an even more daunting task.Comment

Re: Title Bout
as for the strategy cards... i can't remember exactly how they worked. i do remember never really being happy with how they played out. you can actually have realistic fights without even using them at all. as for the TKO chart.... now that i think about it, i did end up using it again, but i made some modifications to make it better. unfortunately, i can't remember what adjustments i made...it's been too long haha!Comment

Re: Title Bout
You're probably going to think this was silly, but at one time, there was an amateur publisher that used to put out a monthly newsletter wth what we would now call "add-ons" to Avalon Hill games that already existed.
Anyway, he "Created" boxing cards for Rocky Balboa and all the fighters from the Rocky Movies using the formulas that AH used in Title Bout.
I never did play them. Wish I could find them now.Comment

Re: Title Bout
I still own this game. I love it.
When my son get's old enough I will be teaching him how to play not only Title Bout but also teach him Statis-Pro Baseball, Football and Basketball.
AH made the best table top sports games IMO. I was a big fan of these growing up. Strato-Matic was also good, but I liked the Fast Action Card system of Statis-Pro over the Dice Role method of Strato-Matic.
I also made my own custom cards for boxers like Tyson, Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, And many others. I used to do huge 32 fighter tournaments and the like. Great fun having Jack Johnson fighting Joe Frazier or replaying the Sugar Ray Leonard Marvin Haglar fight over and over. A great great game.Last edited by Armor and Sword; 11-21-2011, 11:19 PM.Now Playing on PS5:

Re: Title Bout
You hit on something I've wanted to point out for a long time... Why doesnt AH get the respect on this board it deserves?
I mean AH had the best designers, the best solitare gameplay, fast action cards etc. Did you know that the guy (Donohue I believe) that planned the strategy for Desert Storm was a designer for AH?
And just for the record, I had 1972, 1976 and 1985 Statis-Pro Baseball, 1987 and 1991 Statis Pro Football, 1976, 1991 Endzone, I had all the NCAA and NFL sheets for SI football which was owned by AH. I had the 1975, 1976, 1985, 1987, 1991 versions of their NBA game. (I lost the last version when I sold my car and forgot I had it in the trunk), plus I had both the 1975 and 1976 ABA cards that played with the NBA game, I also had AH's Golf, Tennis and Horse Racing as well as both the F1 Racing game with all the tracks and the USAC Indy 500 game.
And no, my names not Kurt Schilling! (inside joke) And still have them.Comment

Re: Title Bout
I also have Win Place and Show!
I agree AH made the very best solitare gameplay. I used to play Statis-Pro Baseball and Football ,Basketball and Title Bout for hours on end.
This is why I appreciate todays sports games more than ever. When I was playing these games we had Atari 2600, NES and Intellivision sports games.....yeah Super Tecmo Bowl was great....but nothing like the sim I would get from Statis-Pro table top games.
Now look at Sports games today. Unbelievable how amazing they are. If you come from the table top sports gaming era I am sure you fully realize how good we have it now with sports sims.
Even the PC text sims like OOTP baseball are amazing in comparison to the old card games.
However, I still love me some Statis-Pro!!!! There is something still very charming about setting up the game boards, shuffling the Fast Action Cards, and keeping all your stat's and results with your No 2 Pencil and your charts.
It is still great fun and I will pas this on to my son who is already showing a big interest in playing (he is 7 not quite ready to play by himself). Now Playing on PS5:

Re: Title Bout
I don't own a MAC so I'm in the dark about PC vMAC gaming options;
I will say IMO that the PC version of Title Bout that I play lacks a certain something. I can't put my finger on it. But as you watch the text outcome per round, you get no feel for the punches or the fighters. It looks almost like random events happening.
At least in the board game, you got a feel for the battle. Maybe because you had to physically write down or mark the outcome of every punch which took time and thus slowed the action down for us to appreciate the nuances.
So while I can't comment on PC vs MAC, I WOULD take the original board version over the PC version. Sorry OOTBPComment
