So they're going back to that, and a pro-system?

Boxing is corrupt by nature, but I hope they can iron out some of the issues going forward.
Ever since the '96 Seoul Olympics, amateur boxing hasn't been the same.
Nobody even wants to broadcast it.

Ah yes, the infamous Roy Jones decision. 1988 Seoul. But then the Olympic boxing went insane and made all the wrong changes, so we get what we have today. Bad decisions are going to happen no matter what system you use - it's an unfortunate fact. The point is that you might as well have entertaining boxing matches if the decisions are going to be toss-ups anyway.

Teddy Atlas also said they were going to pro-style rules starting next Olympics. Maybe we'll finally have some real Olympic boxing to talk about then, instead of this slap-boxing touch-tag we have now. See you in 4 years, amateur boxing...

Did you see the decision against the Japanese fighter??? He knocked the guy from Azerbaijan out - OUT! - and somehow lost the fight! I think he had him down 4-5 times just in the 3rd round, and the ref refused to count or even give the fighter a standing-8, and the last time he was down there is no way he would have beaten a 10-count...heck, he wouldn't have beaten a 20-count! Yet the ref still wouldn't acknowledge any knockdowns or count him out. Then they went to the scorecards, and because the Azerbaijan guy had dusted him a few times earlier in the fight, he got the decision. It might be the worst boxing travesty I've ever seen - worse than Roy Jones '88.

Looks like they overturned the Japan-Azerbaijan bantamweight bout result and the Japanese fighter will be awarded a win and advance. The ref (from Turkmenistan) has been sent home.

Right result...eventually. But still leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Yep, I am so happy about it. As a boxer and as a fan.

It's all very confusing, they are also adding some weird semi-pro thing as well, if you want you can skim through this-

Re: Anyone watching Olympic boxing this year?

Teddy Atlas and Bob Papa going nuts after the result at the end of the fight was awesome...perfectly echoed what any boxing fan watching was thinking.

This is the most concerning part of the story from the NBC link (bold emphasis mine):

<i>AIBA has been involved in controversies regarding Azerbaijan's program as recently as last September, when British network BBC reported on <b>allegations that in exchange for a $10-million loan, Azerbaijan's boxers would be promised two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics.</b>

However, an investigation committee conducted by AIBA determined that the BBC report was "groundless and unsupported by any credible evidence."</i>

Doesn't seem so groundless/unsupported by credible evidence now, does it?
