Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I dont know about easily. He had problems with Brook and Jacobs. Now Canelo isnt as fast as them but he hits harder than most of the people GG has faced.
My heart is with GGG but my money will likely be with Canelo.Comment

Lemieux. He has more power than Canelo, who is more of a junior middleweight than middleweight. Lemieux is one of the biggest punchers in boxing, period.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Lemieux, Jacobs, Rubio.
Curtis Stevens has decent pop, but not world class.
But he has been hit on the button and I don't recall him ever being physically hurt. He barely blinks when tagged.
The thing is, I don't consider Alvarez to have world class power either. On a scale of 1-10, he's maybe a 6.5-7.
His stoppages come mostly from an accumulation of punches.
He couldn't put away an emaciated Chavez Jr despite the fact Junior put up almost no resistance.
Chavez has an unreal chin, but it made me wonder if Alvarez's already pedestrian power was stunted with the jump in weight.
I don't believe he's going to carry the power he did possess at 154 up to 160.
The two sparred years ago and the few reports of that session have indicated that Golovkin wasn't bothered with Canelo's power whatsoever.
That was years ago though and Canelo has certainly grown in both size and skill.
Still, unless Golovkin has lost a step, and perhaps we saw that in the Jacobs fight, I see Triple-G walking away with the victory. And probably by a fair margin.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Canelo looked VERY fit and very fast in the open public workouts by the two fighters yesterday at LA Live.
GGG also looked sharp, but I was really impressed with how cut and quick Canelo looked in the online videos of the separate sessions.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Saw some photo's of Avlarez working out. He's got to be 175 right now.
The dude is a monster. Way bigger than Golovkin.
This is what kills me about boxing.
Alvarez will probably be 180 when he steps in the ring. Golovkin around 168.
It's a Lt Heavyweight fighting a Super Middleweight for the Middleweight crown.
(I'm by no means making early excuses for what transpires on Sept 16th - just making a point).
The sport is rife with boxers who take full advantage of their ability to shed weight and pack it on within 24 hours of their fights.
I know there are fights where Alvarez had 15 to 20 bls on his opponent by fight night.
Gatti ended the career of a guy when he came into the ring weighing over 160 for a JR Welterweight contest.
I'd love to see the rules adjusted so fighters had to weigh-in 2 hours before the opening bell.
BTW, I love how respectful both guys have been to one another.Last edited by Money99; 08-29-2017, 01:18 PM.Comment

Agree w/ Money99's above post completely.
As I always say, the REAL skill that is important in modern boxing is not boxing ability. It's the ability to lose/gain weight quickly and without difficulty.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
But maybe fighters wouldn't be forced or allowed to cut so much weight if there were day-of-fight weigh-ins, making the competition more fair and preventing guys like Chavez Jr. from walking into the ring 15-18 pounds heavier than during the weigh-in.
Too many fights are won and lost on the scales these days. The Chavez-Canelo fight was a prime example.
Chavez lacks the skill and dedication to beat Canelo, but his power gave him the proverbial puncher's chance. But he had to kill himself to make weight and looked like a shell or a ghost at the weigh-in. No amount of hydration would have restored him to peak physical condition in just 30 hours. He had zero chance of showing his power.
That said, I'm vehemently opposed to catchweights designed to make it easier or tougher for fighters to make weight and make better matchups. Stick to the designated weight classes or don't fight at all.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
It could be but if the Jacobs fight was an outlier, it may not be. Canelo has B+ power for a junior middleweight but couldn't even take out a Skinny Junior at +plus+160. Granted Chavez has a chin and he wasn't putting himself out there, but Canelo might have well been fighting a retreating heavy (or skinny) bag. Jacobs can bang and Lemieux can demolish so I doubt GGG is going to be intimidated by Canelo's power. It will be interesting (obvious statement).Comment

All the points you brought up are valid ones.
I wonder about the Jacobs fight as well. Is GGG getting older? Or is/was Jacobs a better fighter than initially thought?
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment on Canelo's power as well.
I don't think he'll carry much with him to 160. C+ seems about right.
Enough to keep someone honest, but GGG has a great chin so I don't see him bothered much by Canelo's strength.
It's his accuracy that will give Golovkin more trouble early on.
Alvarez looked sharp against Chavez. But at the same time, Chavez was, as you stated, a plodding heavy bag in that bout. It wasn't like he was hard to hit.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
It's such a long row to hoe. Sure, they have striking down, but they have to learn so many other things. And they know going into fights that nobody is going to stand and trade with them.
If they can't figure out how to defend against take-downs, or fight from the mat, they're sunk.Comment
