    Lucas Matthysse VS Lamont Peterson

I'm surprised there wasn't a thread for this fight. I set up taping for it Monday, and forgot about it. I just finished watching it along with the rather boring Alexander-Purdy fight.

The ease with which Matthysse defeated Peterson can not be underestimated. This guy can hit.

I don't think anybody really wants this guy, including Garcia and Broner.

Re: Lucas Matthysse VS Lamont Peterson

I was sad to hear that Peterson got KOed. Being from the DMV area, I was always a fan of him and his brother. I was there the night he beat Khan, and while I know it got some help. It was great from the local boxing scene to see one of the Peterson brothers get a belt. Even with the steroids crap I can't root against him or his brother. I guess the good coming out of it was that he got to keep his "championship". Matthysse is a dangerous puncher.

It will be interesting to see Garcia and Matthysse go at it. I hope that the rumors are true and Peterson will be on the undercard.

As for Alexander, I think it would've been a better fight had Alexander not been a 1 handed fighter for most of the fight. It was nice to watch him stay in the pocket and bang on Purdy.

Matthysse has some pop in that punch. I think he's gona KO Garcia.

I don't think Garcia's style and Matthysse's chin and power bode well for Garcia.

Could Matthysse be a possible opponent for Mayweather within 18 months assuming he beats Garcia and another couple of worthy opponents?

Of course there's Bradley*, Pac-Man, and Marquez*.

          *Marquez-Bradley in October.

Are those three guys still with Bob Arum and Top Rank? If so they are for all intents and purposes off limits. Although, Marquez fought Floyd before so he doesn't seem to have a problem telling his guy to make the fight he wants. But I doubt Marquez is in play because...Why? He lost the first fight and it wasn't even competitive. Would you pay Floyd $32 million to fight him again?

As far as Matthysse, his name could come up in discussion, but again what does he bring to the table? The following of Argentina and...? Not talking ****, but asking the question. He has losses on his resume to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander too boot.

Alexander might actually be in play for Floyd in September depending on his hand, as is Malinaggi if he can pull of the up-set of Broner (which I don't see happening).

I was talking about Marquez-Matthysse, not a rematch with Floyd.

Matthysse's questionable split decision losses to Judah and Alexander hardly sully his record. Many observers (including Matthysse cheerleader Al Bernstein) think he won both fights. He knocked both men down, and looks to have improved since then.

He brings to the table POWER. He can hit and hit hard. Boxing fans like that and would be interested in seeing how he takes it up to 147.

Oh well the point about their promoter still stands.

I agree with you that his loses are questionable. But they both came from the same kind of fighter. A slick boxer with pretty solid defense. But yes both losses were suspect.

He looks a lot better than he did before. We have to see how he handles Garcia first.

FYI, Marquez wasnt a TR guy when he fought Floyd. He became one before the 3rd Pacman fight.

Power is what Matthysse brings along with his Argentinian following. When you have power like that ppl from all around the world jump on the bandwagon really fast. If he beats Garcia I don't see how he could be denied a superfight after that, although I am not disagreeing with you regarding his losses. It could be Lucas is ready to break out now. Is it possible he is ready to peak for the next couple of years?

Re: Lucas Matthysse VS Lamont Peterson

Wow. Matthysse seems like a different guy the past 12-months or so. I don't ever remember him hitting like a ton of bricks with every shot, but then, I didn't much pay attention to him until very recently - just saw him fight on some undercards and that was about it. It seems like for someone with such a good record he kind of came out of nowhere onto the big-time scene (but again, people that pay attention probably knew about him and I just didn't pay attention until now). I never realized how much power he has....how the heck did he lose to Alexander?

I feel bad for Peterson...I always liked that guy, and was disappointed by the steroids thing, but now with this decisive loss, I just don't know where he goes from here. Maybe he can climb back up the ranks, but it's tough once you've been tainted by steroids then knocked-out...hope he's able to find a way back.

Peterson still holds the IBF title at 140, so there eventually will still be a fight for him. That fight was ugly, for him. I do think he could've continued past round 3, but I don't think he was going to win the fight. The best thing he has going for him is that he is with Golden Boy and has the IBF belt, so there will be work for him.

Yep, for sure there will be fights; I didn't mean to imply he was done or anything like that. But despite being the IBF titleholder (I wasn't sure why this fight wasn't a title fight; the Showtime guys suggested there was some BS with the commissions or something?), it will be tough for him to be a major draw as a headliner given his recent results. At least he can accelerate a comeback, so-to-speak, by immediately getting a decent fight as a title defense. But it's going to be a long way back to being a top fighter in a really tough division...

Biggest fight on Peterson'a radar is a rematch with Khan once Khan gets KOed again by somebody.

I know what you meant and for the most part I agree, just pointing out in this era of 250 belts having one at least means you will have a title fight to offer TV networks.
